Veterans honored at Memorial Day ceremony in Boulder City

Commander Wainright said people can honor the fallen by simply walking through a cemetery, finding a veteran's grave marker and putting an American Flag on it. "Party Friday, party Saturday, but honor this day", Garcia said.

The state's official Memorial Day ceremony drew thousands to the military graveyard where almost 200,000 veterans and family members are buried.

"It shouldn't be 'Happy Memorial Day, ' okay. It was an honor that he served his country".

"It's humbling to know there's this many people from this standpoint honoring the men and women just like him", said Munoz.

The cemetery was founded in 1845 and is believed to be the oldest burial spot for settlers in Winnebago County. "It's not really a celebration, but we look in the past of the sacrifice they did and look to the future for the future freedoms that we have from the sacrifice that they gave", he added.

"We gather here today because we feel compelled to a shared sense of patriotism to pay homage to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice", he said.

"Armed Forces Day, which honors those that are serving now".

"Thank you for coming to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery to remember and to keep the memory of all our loved ones alive", said guest speaker Sara Elton, Chief of Operations of the National Cemetery Administration. His father served in the Army and died in 1999.

"I just love being here and knowing that our country is being saved by a lot of great people", Dylan Woodward, 11, said.

A memorial wreath was laid and names were read while a bell rang for Veterans who have passed since last year's ceremony. 'Amazing Grace, ' as well as 'God Bless America, ' was sang in front of a large crowd of community members and active service men and women.
