Arsene Wenger agrees to new deal with Arsenal

Arsenal's boss, Arsene Wenger, has agreed a new two-year contract, extending his 21-year reign at the club.

The club are also expected to announce whether they are looking into appointing a director of football to work alongside or above Wenger, or indeed whether that role could be filled by the Frenchman.

Having failed to qualify for the Champions League place for the first time since 1996, the pressure on Wenger's future undoubtedly increased with the Frenchman previously admitting that the continuing uncertainty led to an "absolutely horrendous" environment at the club this season and contributed to their fifth- place finish in the Premier League.

It remains to be seen if Wenger and Arsenal will sever ties just days after the Gunners beat Chelsea at Wembley to claim a record 13th FA Cup success, but Wright believes that could well be the case.

Wenger has implied that he would like to stay at the Emirates and said after the defeat of Chelsea: "You can't have 35 years at the top level if you're not the right man to do the job".

The Frenchman has been at the helm for nearly 21 years and, despite a section of supporters calling for him to depart this summer when his contract expires, he is now expected to further that stay after holding talks with Arsenal's board on Tuesday.

A formal announcement is likely to follow on Wednesday.

"He is set to sign a new two-year deal".

First on his to-do list will be making improved contract offers to Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

Yet Wenger will stay, and risks his already damaged legacy becoming further tarnished at a time when the Premier League has never been so competitive.

Arsenal emerged victorious, despite pre-match predicitions from pundits to the contrary, and the club are now poised to confirm Wenger's stay at the club.

"That kind of behaviour does not reflect what Arsenal is".
