EU, China summit to back climate deal even without US

President Donald Trump is meeting with the head of the Environmental Protection Agency ahead of a decision on whether the United States will withdraw from an global pact aimed at slowing climate change.

On Saturday, Trump said in a Twitter post he would make a decision on whether to support the Paris climate deal next week.

Trump tweeted after he left the G-7 summit in Europe that he planned to make a decision on the Paris accord "this week", and he did not agree to sign a G-7 statement to uphold the climate agreements' carbon reduction commitments.

The statement follows speculation that President Donald Trump may soon announce US withdrawal from the Paris global agreement of 2015 to reduce climate-warming carbon emissions.

Almost 200 nations agreed in 2015 to voluntarily reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Walsh's comments on Wednesday came after reports emerged that Trump had made a decision to withdraw the USA from the historic 2015 agreement, which he had promised to do so during the 2016 campaign. China and the USA account for almost 40 percent of global carbon emissions.

Gutteres never mentioned the American leader by name in his speech at New York University's Stern School of Business, his first major address on climate change since taking the reins of the United Nations on January 1.

The decision to withdraw from the climate accord was influenced by a letter from 22 Republican US senators, including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, calling for an exit, Axios reported.

"I$3 don't know which way Paris will go", Musk tweeted, "but I've done all I can to advise directly to POTUS, through others in WH & via councils, that we remain".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was more blunt, telling reporters she emerged from meeting with Trump disappointed in his views on climate change.

Steve Bannon, Trump's chief strategist and the former head of Breitbart, had pressed Trump to stick with his campaign promise and leave the deal. Here's a rundown of what the deal actually is, why Mr. Trump opposes it and what effects the USA pulling out would have.

"It is absolutely essential that the world implements the Paris Agreement."Trump, who has previously called global warming a hoax, has come under concerted pressure from other world leaders to honour the 2015 Paris Agreement, the first to bind all nations to setting goals to curb carbon emissions".

"The United States of America is in the process of reviewing its policies on climate change and on the Paris Agreement and thus is not in a position to join the consensus on these topics", it said. The Paris Agreement is voluntary and carries no penalties for nations that fail to meet their set targets, leading many to question the benefit of a formal withdrawal, even in the absence of decarbonization efforts.

On Tuesday, Modi said in Berlin that it would be a "crime" to spoil the environment for future generations as the world awaits a decision on USA climate policy.

As a first step, Guterres said he would press for ratification of an agreement reached a year ago on phasing out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.

In an attempt to understand what could happen to the planet if the US pulls out of Paris, The Associated Press consulted with more than two dozen climate scientists and analyzed a special computer model scenario created to calculate potential effects.

"The U.S. matters a great deal", said Climate Interactive co-director Andrew Jones.
