Muslims thankful for Portland's support after fatal stabbings on MAX train

Immediately upon entering the Multnomah County Justice Center Courthouse in OR for his arraignment on Tuesday, Jeremy Christian loudly interrupted the ongoing proceedings from inside his holding chamber, as two officers flanked him. The man, Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, stabbed the men, according to police.

The FBI is investigating the stabbings to determine whether to charge Christian with terrorism or a federal hate crime, said Portland FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele. She said he was being "belligerent and loud" and made anti-Muslim and racist slurs.

"Two precious lives were lost this Memorial Day weekend in Portland and one more, almost so".

Jeremy Joseph Christian, the suspect who stabbed two people to death and injured another last Friday on a crowded transit train, was arraigned in Multnomah County Court in US state of OR on Tuesday.

He was charged with aggravated murder, intimidation and a firearms charge and is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday. Three good Samaritans intervened; and the harasser, Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, of North Portland, stabbed them in retaliation, killing two and injuring one.

The city's mayor says he hopes the slayings that shocked this liberal community will inspire "changes in the political dialogue in this country".

Christian will make his first court appearance in the case Tuesday, and it wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

Mayor Ted Wheeler said he appreciated Trump's words but stressed the need for action.

"I'm so proud of him", said the brother, who asked that he not be named.

At a vigil Saturday near the train station, almost 1,000 people gathered around a mound of bouquets and photographs, praising the men as heroes and saying they hoped others would stand up against hate. "[Christian] responded saying he was concerned about no free speech in Portland". "Our prayers are w/ them", Trump's Twitter message reads.

In the wake of the attack, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler is asking the federal government to cancel a permit for what he called an "alt-right" rally scheduled for Sunday, saying the event could make a hard situation worse.

A woman who was with Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche during his final moments after being stabbed on a MAX train said she wants the world to remember him as a attractive man.

Two days after a white supremacist in Portland, Oregon, allegedly killed two men and attacked a third who confronted him for shouting an anti-Muslim rant at two teen girls, President Donald Trump tweeted a statement of condemnation from his official POTUS account. "He was just telling us that we basically weren't anything and that we should just kill ourselves". A third victim, 21-year-old Micah David Cole-Fletcher, was treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

In the letter, she encouraged Trump to be a be a "President for all Americans". He was arrested at a March 4 protest in Berkeley, California. Police say Best died at the scene and that Meche died at a hospital.

Best, a 23-year Army veteran, worked as a technician for the city's Bureau of Development Services and once ran for Clackamas County commissioner.

Christian attended a similar rally in late April wearing an American flag around his neck and carrying a baseball bat.
