Official says Trump expected to pull U.S. from Paris deal

Signed a little more than year ago by 195 nations, the Paris deal is meant to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and is seen as one of former President Barack Obama's biggest triumphs.

It very likely will take place in Canada, around the same time as the United Nations General Assembly, which starts in New York City on September 12. Language for the withdrawal was still being prepared Wednesday, and will likely include specific legal conditions crafted by Trump's administration.

Axios reports that the decision to withdraw from the accord followed an appeal by 22 Republican senators, including Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell, calling for a "clean exit" from the agreement.

Guterres said that if the USA does exit the agreement, it is important that cities, states and businesses in the country remain engaged with the goals the deal outlined. The United States would join Syria and Nicaragua as the only non-participants in the accord.

CEO Andy Atkins said it was "critical" other countries strengthen their resolve to tackle carbon emissions.

Tillerson's former employer Exxon Mobil, along with dozens of other USA firms, have also been proponents of remaining in the agreement.

"Don't know which way Paris will go, but I've done all I can to advise directly to POTUS, through others in WH & via councils, that we remain", the founder of electric carmaker Tesla and the private space exploration firm SpaceX tweeted.

Failure to exit the agreement could also undermine his "America First" strategy, the newspaper noted.

Andy Lester, conservation director at A Rocha, Britain's primary Christian conservation charity, said: 'I think our greatest disappointment is he has been treating it like a media hype story. "If other countries lose confidence in our commitment to climate change, they may cut back their commitment". They're going to fill the gap. Major oil producers are also looking to the future and diversifying their economies and even Saudi Arabia has announced plans to install 700 megawatts of solar and wind power, he said. The U.S., which took the lead in negotiating the deal, signed onto the agreement in April 2016, along with China, the European Union and 171 other nations.

Michael Brune, executive director of the environmentalist Sierra Club, denounced the decision.

"Donald Trump has made a historic mistake which our grandchildren will look back on with stunned dismay at how a world leader could be so divorced from reality and morality", he said in a statement. 'This deal puts the fossil fuel industry on the wrong side of history'.

Under the pact, the United States committed to reducing its emissions by 26 to 28 per cent from 2005 levels by 2025.

Trump has already taken action in recent months to weaken the environmental legacy of the Obama administration by paving the way to overturn rules to curb greenhouse gas emissions and protect American waterways clean from pollution.

About seven out of 10 registered voters, or 69 per cent, say that the United States should participate in the Paris agreement, compared with 13 per cent who say that the country should not, according to a November 2016 poll by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.
