Tiger Woods 'asleep at wheel' before arrest

Former world number one golfer Tiger Woods said an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications was to blame for his early-morning DUI arrest near his Jupiter Island home in Florida on Monday. The report also repeats what was in the documents from the Post this morning: Woods said he hadn't consumed alcohol but had taken medication.

ESPN's report states that Woods told police he was taking several prescriptions.

When officers came upon Woods, driving in the opposite direction of his house and restaurant at approximately 3 a.m., he was asleep in his auto, which was parked on the side of the road. The car's engine was running and its lights were on. "Woods had extremely slow and slurred speech".

Woods also told police he had been using four prescription medications including the powerful painkiller Vicodin, which is commonly prescribed following surgery.

The sportsman was taken into custody by police in Jupiter, Florida during the early hours of Memorial Day holiday for driving under the influence, and shortly after his release from jail, the 41-year-old offered up his version of events surrounding the scandalous incident.

Police in Florida said Tiger Woods has been arrested for DUI.

The affidavit said Woods failed a sobriety test on the side of the road because he couldn't keep his balance or follow instructions. And we wish him well.

The officer said Woods was asleep at the wheel, with a phone in his lap and his hands resting on his legs, and he only slightly opened his eyes when the officer shined his flashlight through the window. Scraggly facial hair. A white T-shirt. He was released from custody on his own recognizance, meaning no bail money was necessary, at 10:50 a.m.

He faces a charge of driving under the influence of either alcohol or drugs - police have yet to specify which.

Woods blew a.000 on the breathalyzer twice, indicating no presence of alcohol in his system.

He also was cited for improper parking.

Woods, a 14-time major champion who ranks No. 2 in PGA Tour history with 79 victories, has not played golf for four months. On that particular test, Woods said he understood what was being asked of him before saying, "Yes, recite the entire national anthem backwards". I asked Woods if he had taken any medication to which he stated.

Woods, whose 79 victories rank No. 2 on the PGA Tour's career list, has not competed for almost four months. However, he did reveal that he tried to assist Woods in getting help on his back at the Masters before Woods underwent a fourth surgery, this time a spinal fusion on his lower back.

Woods said in his statement that he fully cooperated with law enforcement and thanked Jupiter Police and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office for being professional.
