Trump blasts Russian Federation probe, urges testimony from former adviser Page

Trump - whose spokespeople had previously minimized the role Carter Page played as a campaign adviser - wrote a pair of tweets after Page's letter to the House Intelligence Committee that went public earlier this week.

Trump has shown before that his tweets are influenced by Fox News, but this is worse than influence.

It's unclear why Trump now says Page could be so crucial to the Congressional investigation into the possible Russian collusion, given that the White House has sought to distance itself from Page.

The same source told NBC News that Trump had never even met Page in person.

The FBI obtained a warrant under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act last summer to monitor Page's communications, The Washington Post reported in April.

"Fox and Friends" had reported minutes earlier that Page sent a letter to the House Intelligence Committee chairman, Rep. Mike Conaway, and ranking member Rep. Adam Schiff on Monday, telling them he had learned from committee staff that his "previously scheduled appointment" to testify before the committee had been postponed.

On May 9, the president fired FBI director Comey who was heading up the bureau's investigation into Russian interference in the election.

Page, in his letter, wrote he was disappointed he "might not be immediately afforded the opportunity to address" allegations made against him in a series of leaks and innuendo stemming from government investigations into Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election. He mocked that tweet early Wednesday as well. Soon after, the president tweeted about it from his personal Twitter account, @realDonaldTrump.
