United Nations: Climate action is unstoppable

Mr. Trump has always been a critic of climate change. Here's a rundown of what the deal actually is, why Mr. Trump opposes it and what effects the US pulling out would have.

In a May 2016 speech in North Dakota outlining his energy policies, Trump accused Obama of entering the accord "unilaterally and without the permission of Congress".

"Reports that President Trump is ready to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement are alarming", Emanuel's statement said.

The Paris Agreement, which was signed in 2015 by 195 countries, states that the parties will act to limit global warming and greenhouse gas emissions.

Almost 200 nations, including the USA, agreed in 2015 to voluntarily reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to combat climate change.

Back in the question and answer session, Guterres said, "We believe that it will be important for the USA not to leave the Paris Agreement". When asked what he would do if Trump withdraws from the Paris Agreement, Musk responded, "will have no choice but to depart councils in that case".

"We believe that it would be important for the USA not to leave the Paris agreement", Guterres said in response to a question following his address at New York University.

Axios reported late Saturday, citing sources with direct knowledge of the situation, that Trump has already informed multiple people in the government, including EPA administrator Scott Pruitt, that he intends to pull the USA from the worldwide climate change deal.

The United States is the biggest polluter in the world after China, emitting 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to self-reported data to the UN. A computer simulation predicted that if the USA does not curb emissions, while the other nations stay true to the Paris Agreement, then America would increase global warming by 0.3 degree. Only two countries, Syria and Nicaragua, do not back the accord.

Why does Mr. Trump want to withdraw from the Paris Agreement?

Mr Trump, who in a November 2012 tweet dismissed climate change as a hoax, pledged during his election campaign to "cancel" the accord within 100 days of becoming president to boost America's coal and oil industries.

Environmental advocates and scientists are of course alarmed that the USA would take such a combative position regarding climate change.

Trump is getting conflicting advice from various quarters of the administration. President Trump made no commitment but reserved the right to make a final decision next week.

Making his first address on climate since taking the United Nations helm five months ago, Guterres said it was "absolutely essential" that the world implements the 2015 agreement "with increased ambition".

McKenna wouldn't speculate on U.S. President Donald Trump's decision, but said she's had many conversations with her American counterpart in an effort to make an economic case for addressing climate change.
