Waiting for Trump to decide about the climate deal

Climate change may affect food water security warns UN chief

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made an impassioned appeal Tuesday for the world to intensify action to combat climate change and implement the Paris Agreement to limit carbon emissions as President Donald Trump debates whether the USA will withdraw from the accord.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez, who was Labor secretary under Obama, called Trump's decision "a global embarrassment" given the global scientific consensus about the warming Earth and the potential environmental threats from a hotter planet.

Environmental advocates and scientists are of course alarmed that the US would take such a combative position regarding climate change.

Today during a Senate Estimates hearing the Government was asked by Labor's Penny Wong whether they had discussed the "possible U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement".

Amid reports that Trump could withdraw, the Associated Press reported that European Union and Chinese officials have vowed to reaffirm their commitment to the agreement.

President Donald Trump says he'll announce his decision on the Paris climate accord "over the next few days".

The administrator of the EPA, Scott Pruitt, was working on details.

Trump will meet with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, himself a former CEO of ExxonMobil, on Wednesday, with the Paris Agreement a likely topic of discussion.

But now Trump is wavering on whether to keep that campaign promise.

It also makes the U.S.an outlier among the world's nations, almost all of whom support the climate change accord.

In a speech delivered in Germany, she later said that Europe must "take its fate into its own hands", rather than relying on and pandering to the US.

This will completely unravel former President Barack Obama's climate change policy, and will impact the global fight against rising temperatures, as the U.S. is the second biggest emitter of greenhouse gases.

But Ivanka Trump, the President's top aide and daughter, pressed aides to look at the full picture when considering what withdrawal could mean.

This is the subject that Trump is spending a great deal of time on, and one that he spoke to the G7 members about during their meetings, Spicer said.

Forty Democratic senators sent Trump a letter urging him to stay in, saying a withdrawal would hurt America's credibility and influence on the world stage. Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and founder of Tesla, tweeted earlier this month that he spoke with Trump about sticking with the deal. Trump has called climate change a hoax; Musk is a longtime clean-energy advocate who leads electric vehicle maker Tesla and solar energy provider SolarCity.

Although he tweeted that he would make a decision next week, his apparent reluctance to embrace the first legally binding global climate deal that was signed by 195 countries clearly annoyed German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
