Arsene Wenger is set to remain as coach at Arsenal for two more years, the club's official website announced on Wednesday.

"Again, at some point of course we will have to transition to the era beyond Arsene and that is not a sentimental connection that we have, that is a connection that is driven by what is best for the football club. He has a fantastic track record and has our full backing".

Arsenal have not won the league title since the 2003/04 season and a FA Cup final success over Chelsea this year was their only saving grace as they picked up a piece of silverware.

Within two years, Arsenal had won the domestic double - the Premier League and FA Cup - which was even more impressive considering they chased down Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United to win the league.

Riyad Mahrez - The Times claim the Gunners and Tottenham will battle it out for the Algerian global, who was highly influential in helping Leicester win the Premier League in 2016.

"Our ambition is to win the Premier League and other major trophies in Europe", Kroenke said.

Television presenter and Arsenal fan Piers Morgan vented his frustration at the news of Wenger's new deal.

"We look to be stronger everywhere".

Arsene Wenger called for unity from Arsenal's supporters after ending the speculation over his future by signing a new contract.

Asked if the decision was easy or hard, Wenger said: "For me it's always easy on a loving affair because I identify myself so much with the club".

"We already face a season in the Europa League - and things could get a lot worse before they start to get better".

"I am grateful to have the support of the board and (majority owner) Stan (Kroenke) in doing everything we can to win more trophies". Am I the right man to take this club further?

Gazidis said there was no complacency.

The 28-year-old Chilean, though, has made it clear to be a great player you need to win trophies on a regular basis - two Copas America have sated his global appetite - hence why Bayern Munich's apparent interest in him could turn his head. Everything we do is created to make that happen and we will be working hard on and off the pitch this summer to improve and make a strong challenge next season.

Although Fabregas had now emerged as a truly outstanding player, scoring 19 goals from midfield, Arsenal were still off the pace in the league, finishing third, while they lost to Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The following day, an estimated 250,000 Gunners fans turned out to watch an open-top bus parade through Islington - which many probably thought would never come.
