Activists investigating Ivanka brands in China arrested, missing

Their investigation had been into labour practices at factories that produced footwear for US President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump and other Western brands such as Nine West, Karl Lagerfeld and Coach.

One man has been arrested and two others are missing in southern China after conducting an investigation into a Chinese factory making Ivanka Trump-branded shoes, China Labor Watch, a New York-based advocacy group, said today.

Last Thursday activist Hua Haifeng, 36, left work and tried to travel to Hong Kong to meet journalists, including an NYT reporter.

The reported arrest and disappearances come at a time of sustained pressure on labour activists in China amid a crackdown on civil society under President Xi Jinping. The two other men, Li Zhao and Su Heng are missing.

They included employees working for as many as 18 hours a day for pay below the minimum wage, he said.

An Ivanka Trump representative declined to comment. They were investigating alleged labor abuses at a factory that makes shoes for several major brands, including Ivanka Trump. A labor group in the country had been looking into allegations that a factory used by the First Daughter's company to make shoes was severely underpaying workers.

China Labour Watch is one of the highest profile rights groups working in China, examining working conditions in factories that were the backbone of China's massive economic expansion, supplying some of the world's top companies. The companies didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

"They must be held either by the factory or the police to be unreachable", Li claimed.

Trump's communications director Dubke resigns
He was responding to reports that Trump is looking for a major shakeup in his communication team as part of which Dubke resigned. The White House offered no explanation for his abrupt departure.

Li says he's going to submit his video footage to Ivanka Trump's company. She resigned from her management role at the clothing and accessories company when she took a job in her father's administration, but she still owns part of the business.

Deng said the news came as a shock.

Jessica Skeens, 28, of Farmland was driving a van on the Muncie Bypass when passenger Nathaniel Leon Jordan, 27, punched her and grabbed the steering wheel, according to state police.

China's Ministry of Public Security and police in Ganzhou city and Jiangxi province could not be reached for comment Tuesday, which was a national holiday in China.

The Chinese government has stepped up its clamping down on independent labor groups in recent years.

Patrick Poon, a China researcher for Amnesty International said the activists' predicament is "extremely worrying" because labour activism, which mainly targets companies rather than the government, is "usually considered less sensitive than other human rights and political activism". "With the tightening economic situation, authorities could be looking to protect local manufacturing industries at all costs, even if that includes detaining activists bringing up labor issues".

He also rejects the police charges that Hua Haifeng and his colleagues were using illegal surveillance gear in the Huajian shoe factory.
