At least 7 US citizens injured in Kabul blast

"There was a clear failure to anticipate a major security threat in a highly secured area", said Michael Kugelman of the USA -based Wilson Center.

The government source said Wednesday that nothing had changed regarding the government's fundamental stance on deportations to Afghanistan, but that embassy staff had "more important things to do" than receive failed asylum seekers in the coming days.

A driver for the BBC and a technology worker with TOLO TV were killed and other people who work in the media were wounded, the Pajhwok Afghan News network says. One other Afghan guard was reported missing. The blast left a gaping crater, at least five meters (yards) deep.

A State Department official says nine Afghan guards at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul were killed in the massive suicide truck bomb attack.

In addition to the loss of lives and injuries, the explosion also resulted in considerable damage to the immediate and surrounding, with some embassies being seriously affected.

The Kabul headquarters of NATO's mission to Afghanistan also denounced the vehicle bombing which the alliance said went off near Zambaq Square, close to the area housing several diplomatic and government facilities.

The NATO statement praised "the courage of Afghan Security Forces, especially the police and first responders". Ghani visited some of those wounded in the attack in the hospital.

"The blast was so huge that it dug a big crater as deep as four meters", or 13 feet, Kabul's police chief said https://t.co/ML7zWRRImE pic.twitter.com/gwdKQaVoW9- The New York Times (@nytimes) May 31, 2017 Dozens of people gathered at the entrance of WAK hospital in Kabul to donate blood to the wounded of today's attack in Kabul. pic.twitter.com/p8NESc8T59- Fahim Abed (@fahimabed) May 31, 2017 "United in shock" The bombing drew worldwide condemnation, ranging from India and Pakistan to the United States, the European Union and Pope Francis. "Both the Taliban and Islamic State have stepped up attacks on Kabul and elsewhere in Afghanistan", reports NPR's Jennifer Glasse.

Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that the bombing had "nothing to do with the Mujahedeen of Islamic Emirate [Taliban]".

"The attack demonstrates a complete disregard for civilians and reveals the barbaric nature of the enemy faced by the Afghan people", said the statement.

We strongly condemn the blast in Kabul.

President Ashraf Ghani has condemned a massive bomb attack in Afghanistah's capital Kabul, which killed at least 90 people, as "cowardly". Nine Afghan guards working for a US -contracted security company were also killed.

China's foreign ministry said its embassy was partly damaged but that no staffers or Chinese citizens were injured.

Germany has had troops in Afghanistan for 15 years, primarily in the north in and around Mazar-e-Sharif. "Forces supporting terrorism need to be defeated", he added.

In a message, he said that such wanton acts of violence can have no justification and the perpetrators and those who support and shelter them should be punished for this crime against humanity.

Afghan officials have said a suicide auto bombing killed 80 and wounded as many as 350.

France, India, Turkey, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Bulgaria similarly reported damage to their embassies, including shattered windows, as the blast drew an avalanche of worldwide condemnation.

Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Donati said a vehicle packed with explosives detonated close to the green zone entrance.

"Business will be very bad, nobody will come for shopping anymore", he added.

Shortly after the explosion, all roads in Wazir Akbar Khan were blocked off by Afghan security forces and helicopters were deployed over the neighborhood.
