"Bathroom bill" continues to bedevil Texas politics

The bill is sponsored by 69th District Rep. James Frank, who also authored companion legislation in the Texas House of Representatives. Larry Gonzales, R-Round Rock, said at a Capitol press conference. "It is the purposeful inaction by the Texas Senate that puts us where we are today". The Texas Medical Board is among those hanging in the balance.

The bill by Austin Democratic Senator Kirk Watson was given final approval by the Senate on Sunday night 31-0.

The Senate, over which Lt. Gov.

"That's why the courts are there", Republican state Sen.

With the clock ticking on the legislative session, Straus said on Friday that the House will not appoint members to negotiate with the Senate on its proposed compromise on a "bathroom bill".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was right when he told Republican legislators that their plan to replace Obamacare could prove too hard to accomplish, according to The New York Times.

"This is not personal,"he said". The amendment, added by the House in a last-ditch effort to save those state agencies and avoid the need for a special session, was necessary because the House failed to pass a standalone bill to extend those agencies' lives.

Without action by the Legislature, the agencies without regulations - such as the Texas Medical Board - would enter a one-year "wind-down" period after September 1, 2017, in which they would begin the process of shutting down completely.

Agencies under sunset review are set for extinction if lawmakers don't approve legislation to continue them. "It's absurd that bathroom bills have taken on greater urgency than fixing our school finance system". As such, the health care plan must comply with a series of special rules, including one that says the bill must not increase the federal deficit in a 10-year window.

Patrick echoed that sentiment, saying he had spoken with Abbott in recent hours.

Patrick said Straus is right that the governor is the only one able to call a special session.

The House last weekend approved a scaled-back measure applying only to public schools, which educate roughly 5.3 million students, more than any other state except California.

The House instead has approved measures to give taxpayers more information about their local property tax bills and to say that students who don't want to use the restrooms that align with their "biological sex" should be given another option.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott said Thursday enough time remains for lawmakers to strike a deal.
