Dead, Hundreds Injured In Kabul Bombing

Both Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Foreign Affairs Minister Bert Koenders spoke out against a massive bombing in the Afghan capital of Kabul this morning that left at least 80 people dead and an estimated 364 people wounded.

Germany will not send failed asylum seekers back to Afghanistan in the next few days after a blast killed at least 80 people in Kabul, a German interior ministry spokesman said on Wednesday, but the policy of mass deportations remains in place.

Masood Toarozai, who runs a tailoring store about 200 yards from blast site, said: "I had just opened the shop and was settling down with three of my employees when there was a bang". None of the wounded Americans appeared to have life-threatening injuries, the official said.

Unsworth says the attack is "a devastating loss to the BBC and to Mohammed Nazir's friends and family".

"The bombing in Kabul is a horrific act of violence and a heartbreaking reminder of the toll that Afghan civilians continue to pay in a conflict where armed groups deliberately target them and the government fails to protect them", Amnesty International's Afghanistan researcher Horia Mosadiq said in a statement.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, with the Taliban saying it had "nothing to do" with the explosion. "It's always Afghans that are harmed and get killed rather than who the attacker wants to target".

The commander of USA forces in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson, told a congressional hearing this year that he needed several thousand more troops to help Afghan forces break a "stalemate" with the Taliban.

United States ambassador to Afghanistan Hugo Llorens issued a scathing statement condemning the "complete disregard for human life", saying those behind the attack deserved our "utter scorn".

The explosion also shattered windows at the Japanese embassy.

Kawasi said the wounded were admitted to different Kabul hospitals.

"The vigilance and courage of Afghan security forces prevented the VBIED (vehicle-borne improvised explosive device) from gaining entry to the Green Zone, but the explosion caused civilian casualties", North Atlantic Treaty Organisation said in a statement.

The bomb, one of the deadliest in Kabul and coming at the start of the holy month of Ramadan, exploded close to the entrance to the German embassy, wounding some staff, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said.

The neighbourhood is considered Kabul's safest area, with foreign embassies protected by dozens of 10ft blast walls and government offices, guarded by police and national security forces.

According to the NATO-led stabilization mission Resolute Support, Afghan security forces stopped the tanker with the bomb entering a heavily secured green zone.
