Jury selection ends for day in officer's trial

Defense attorneys for St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez, 29, want to block the jury from hearing that his victim, Philando Castile, 32, had a legal permit to carry a weapon, The Star Tribune reported.

Yanez was later charged with second-degree manslaughter and two counts of endangering safety by firing his gun near Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and her daughter.

Each moment of the July 6 exchange was captured on audio from Yanez's squad auto and on video. Jury selection begins Tuesday, May 30, 2017, for Yanez. The shooting's gruesome aftermath was streamed live on Facebook by Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, who was in the vehicle with her young daughter. The words of Castile's mother Valerie are inscribed on one side noting her son's soft-spoken nature.

The video quickly went viral, sparking protests nationwide and renewing criticism of the use of deadly force by police, especially against African-American men. Even Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton asked days after the shooting if it would have happened if Castile hadn't been black.

Yanez, who is Latino, is charged with second-degree manslaughter, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

"Jurors are very reluctant to second-guess the split-second life-or-death decisions of an on-duty police officer involved in a violent street encounter with a citizen", Stinson said.

The trial of St. Anthony, Minn., Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez, who fatally shot and killed Philando Castile during a traffic stop, is scheduled to begin Tuesday with jury selection.

Here's the timeline of the incident based on audio and video recordings, as presented in the criminal complaint against Yanez.

Castile was armed that night, but had a legal permit to carry a weapon.

Castile moans and says, "I wasn't reaching for it", according to the complaint. Gray also said that Castile's permit was invalid anyway since he falsely stated on a 2015 permit application that he was not a marijuana user.

Trump bumbles across the Middle East
Trump also said that Iran should have thanked the US for the 2015 nuclear agreement, because it led to sanctions being lifted. Islamist gunmen who murdered at least 26 Christians traveling on a bus on Friday in central Egypt forced their victims.

Yanez screamed: "Don't pull it out", and pulled his gun with his right hand. The seventh shot was sacked at 9:06:02 p.m. Kauser did not touch or remove his gun.

Reynolds: "Stay with me, we got pulled over for a busted tail light in the back". And the police just he's, he's, he's covered. "He's carried. He is licensed to carry".

Reynolds: "I will sir".

Reynolds: "He just shot his arm off". "The prosecution, I assume, is going to press hard on that, the fact that they're an officer you still hold him equally accountable".

She also says: "He's licensed. Oh my God. Please don't tell me he's dead".

Yanez's side of the story was partly posted on the Ramsey County Attorney's website. The officer was interviewed July 7 by investigators. The recording quickly went viral on social media.Yanez said he had reason to pull over the vehicle because Castile looked like a suspect in the recent robbery of a convenience store, court documents said.

"And he put his hand around something", Yanez was quoted as saying.

SEPIC: Castile who worked for years as a school cafeteria supervisor had a legally permitted handgun in his pocket.

Defense Attorney Marsh Halberg believes Yanez is starting off with a slight advantage, public opinion of the hard job those in law enforcement do every day.

"I know he had an object and it was dark", he said. "I think that's the way the system is meant to work".
