Geovanni Borjas, 32, was identified as a suspect in the slayings of Michelle Lozano, 17, and Bree'Anna Guzman, 22, after investigators used a controversial DNA testing technique known as familial DNA testing, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said.

Police believe both women were kidnapped and then killed.

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck is expected to formally announce the arrest and provide additional information at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

The teen's body was found about 11:40 p.m. April 25, 2011, dumped along the Golden State (5) Freeway near State Street in Boyle Heights. A homeless person called police after finding the girl's nude body in a broken container in the brush. Lozano was abducted from Lincoln High School, also in the Lincoln Heights area northeast of downtown Los Angeles, a day before her body was found.

Guzman disappeared in December 2011 after she told relatives she was heading out to buy cough drops. Her body was found a month later along a highway ramp.

"Michelle was murdered, she was sexually assaulted and she was discarded", police stated.

The sample of the suspect's DNA was retrieved after investigators kept an eye on Borjas for weeks and collected the DNA after he spat on the sidewalk, Beck said.

Detectives have said forensic evidence linked the two slayings, but have declined to provide specific details.

DNA was found at both crime scenes but the cases remained unsolved.

Borjas' criminal history includes an ex-girlfriend's three-year domestic violence restraining order against him.

On Tuesday, Borjas was charged with two counts of murder, two counts of rape and one count of kidnapping in connection with the Guzman and Lozano killings, according to the District Attorney. The first was Lonnie Franklin Jr., known as the Grim Sleeper, who detectives believe killed at least 25 women and was sentenced to death previous year.

It has been used only a handful of times in Los Angeles and led to the arrest of Lonnie Franklin Jr.in the Grim Sleeper serial killings, which spanned from 1985 to 2007. The woman alleged in court documents that the 6-foot-1, 265-pound Borjas was physically abusive to her throughout their two-and-a-half year relationship and that he had broken her nose, choked her and pushed her down the stairs, among other acts.

In an interview a year ago, Darlene Guzman said her daughter, Bree'Anna, worked at a kiosk selling fleece leggings and had plans to one day work as a baker. Hanasono refused to set bail, however, saying it was for the protection of the public.

"Today, Michelle and Bree'Anna's friends and family are finally within reach of some of the justice that they and this city deserve", said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti at a Los Angeles Police Department press conference. 'That gives me a lot of happiness. He's arrested, and he won't hurt anybody. "I have closure now". Their bodies were dumped along freeways in 2011.
