Trump Expected To Pull US From Paris Climate Accord, Official Says

Senior adviser Jared Kushner generally thinks the deal is bad but would like to find a way to see if US emissions targets can be changed.

"We saw another statement today that suggested he's wavering but unfortunately, based on everything else we've heard him say in his campaign and since, I fear the worst and therefore we will be ready to act", he continued.

In South Florida, a withdrawal from the plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions could leave city and state governments on their own as their communities flood, said Jennifer Jurado, chief climate resiliency officer for Broward County. That decision produced years of distrust about the commitment of the United States to combating climate change.

Ahead of the expected Trump exit, some analysts were pinning hopes on the European Union - suddenly needing to become a lot more united amid Britain's planned exit and increasingly fraught ties with the Trump administration - teaming up with China to reinvigorate the Paris agreement. Like the other officials, that person was not authorized to describe the private discussions by name and spoke only on condition of anonymity.

But now, with Trump teetering on making a decision that will make environmentalists scream, Musk is doing what he can to keep the historic Paris Agreement intact.

According to his top economic adviser Gay Cohn, Mr. Trump's views on climate change were "evolving," but Mr. Trump's delay in formally deciding whether or not to stay involved in the accord forced G-7 leaders to declare the "not in a position to join the consensus" around the agreement.

Stars and politicians alike turned to Twitter to express concern over abandoning the agreement, with Chelsea Handler writing, "Yeah, who cares about climate change? Climate solutions provide opportunities that are unmatchable". She said the agreement "honors our collective moral responsibility to leave future generations with a planet that is clean, healthy and sustainable".

Mr. Trump has repeatedly expressed doubts about climate change, at times calling it a hoax to weaken USA industry. But Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, a noted friend of Big Oil, has declared himself a major supporter of the climate accord.

Details on just how exactly the US will be withdrawing are still being worked out by a team that includes EPA administrator Scott Pruitt. In the past, Trump has repeatedly questioned the global scientific consensus on climate change, once calling it a "hoax" invented by the Chinese. He has spent his first months in office working to delay and roll back federal regulations limiting greenhouse gas emissions while pledging to revive long-struggling US coal mines.

While President Trump appears on the verge of reneging USA commitments completely, countries like China and India, who along with the US are among the biggest polluters on the planet, are sprinting ahead to meet their goals.

Already, the United States employs more people in solar energy (almost 374,000) than in coal (barely 160,000), according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Reports that #Trump will ditch Paris climate deal this week! Forty Democratic senators sent Trump a letter urging him to stay in, saying a withdrawal would hurt America's credibility and influence on the world stage. They include Apple, Google and Walmart.

In recent months, both Democrats and some House Republicans have pressed Trump not to exit the deal, acknowledging that scientists overwhelmingly say that climate change is being fueled by man-made greenhouse gas emissions.

It could also weaken the commitments of other countries including China and India who, in addition to the United States, are some of the largest producers of carbon dioxide.
