White Supremacist Portland Suspect Calls Murders Act Of 'Patriotism'

Micah Fletcher, one of three men stabbed during last week's racist attack on a Portland, Oregon train, says he's having a hard time processing what happened to him.

Immediately upon entering the Multnomah County Justice Center Courthouse in OR for his arraignment on Tuesday, Jeremy Christian loudly interrupted the ongoing proceedings from inside his holding chamber, as two officers flanked him.

Detective Michele Michaels says in a probable cause affidavit made public Tuesday that the videos include audio of Christian, 35, spewing racial and religious epithets during the attack that killed two men and wounded a third. The mayor called for the cancellation of a pre-scheduled "Trump Free Speech Rally" planned for next weekend, saying the event would be inappropriate and warning it may pose a risk to public safety.

Christian, who is from OR, had been hurling racial slurs at two teenage girls - one of whom was Muslim - just before allegedly killing his victims, Ricky John Best, 53, of Happy Valley, and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, 23, of Portland. Fletcher was also stabbed but survived his injuries.

Charges include aggravated murder, attempted murder, and misdemeanor intimidation - Oregon's statute covering crimes of bias against a person's race, color, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin.Macy, even with her headphones on, said she heard Christian before she saw him.Police and witnesses say the victims were defending two teen girls who were the focus of Christian's tirade. "This is America. Get out if you don't like free speech", he shouted in the court. Fletcher is no longer hospitalized and attended Christian's arraignment Tuesday. He wore a blue jail jumpsuit and didn't say anything other than to yell slogans, including "Death to the enemies of America".

I'm writing to you today, Memorial Day, to share my heart after losing my son.

Christian is white, and court documents report him to be 6 foot 3 inches and 250 pounds.

Christian has three prior felonies. "Our prayers are w/ them".

Police have been investigating his alleged extremist ideology, while his Facebook page is filled with anti-Semitic comments and other evidence of his views.

"I hope we rise to the memory of these two gentlemen who lost their lives", Wheeler said.

The Muslim groups, CelebrateMercy and the Muslim Education Trust, created a LaunchGood online fundraising campaign on Saturday to raise money to help with funeral costs for Best and Namkai-Meche and Fletcher's medical bills.

When the train came to a stop at the Hollywood Transit Center, terrified passengers fled, but some stayed behind to tend to the victims, he said. Videos have surfaced showing Christian shouting at people, at one point saying the N-word, as police officers separated him.

"I am very thankful as a Muslim, I am very thankful as a Portlander. that we stand together here as one", Muhammad Najieb, an imam at the Muslim Community Center, told The Associated Press.

Christian is due back in court on 7 June.

He told jailers that he has no income, no mental health issues and does not remember the last time he had a permanent address.

It was confirmed the man in the videos was Mr.

If found guilty of the murder charges, Christian could face either life imprisonment or the death penalty.

Christian also has a 2011 conviction on federal charges of felon in possession of a firearm, court documents show. Police confiscated the bat, and he was then caught on camera clashing with counter-protesters.
