Congress Subpoenas Trump And Obama Officials In Russia Inquiry

Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn's resigned as National Security Adviser on February 13.

The House Intelligence Committee has reportedly issued seven subpoenas in connection with its investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and of the Obama administration's potentially illegal use of the government's foreign-intelligence-collection power for the goal of monitoring Americans - in particular, Americans connected to the Trump campaign and transition. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, and Adam Schiff, D-California, said in a statement.

"We hope and expect that anyone called to testify or provide documents will comply with that request, so that we may gain all the information within the scope of our investigation", Reps. That soon led to calls from Democrats, and eventually Republicans, that Nunes should consider stepping aside in the Russian investigation.

Obama's national security adviser, Susan Rice, has already confirmed that she asked the intelligence community to unmask some of these names, though she insists that it was not done for political purposes.

The names of American citizens who are caught up in incidental surveillance are protected by law, with very few exceptions granted to unmask them, even within classified material. On May 19, he told Fox News that he is still presiding over the unmasking investigation.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the seven subpoena issuances.

CNN and Politico reported on Wednesday that Michael Flynn, the former National Security Advisor under Trump, and Michael Cohen, Trump's personal attorney, also received subpoenas. Flynn's reported acquiescence comes less than a week after his attorneys said their client would not cooperate with the committee. He reportedly was involved in a back-channel plan, which never came to fruition, which would have involved a peace agreement between Russian Federation and Ukraine, and the lifting of USA sanctions against Moscow.

Putin says Snowden was wrong to leak secrets, but is no traitor
Allegations that Russian Federation meddled in the USA presidential election in 2016 have further strained the relationship. Snowden, 33, was given asylum in Russian Federation in 2013 after leaking classified information about USA spy operations.

Cohen said Tuesday that he had declined to participate in both the House and Senate intelligence committee investigations.

"So now it is reported that the Democrats, who have excoriated Carter Page about Russian Federation, don't want him to testify".

One of the least-discussed aspects of the current scandal enveloping the Trump administration over Russian contact is that Russia nearly inarguably at this point engaged in an act of information warfare. Lieberman last week withdrew his name from consideration as Federal Bureau of Investigation director due to the perception of a conflict of interest.

"He's not involved in the Russian Federation investigation".

During the fundraiser, Nunes also addressed Trump's unfounded claim that former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower.

During the meeting the president reportedly told Comey that he hoped the Bureau would not pursue the investigation into Michael Flynn's correspondence with Ambassador Kislyak and the retired lieutenant general's reported business dealings with Russian Federation media outlets.

The aide argued that "temporarily stepping aside" and "recusing" are two entirely different things, and noted that Nunes still has an important job to fill as chairman of the House intelligence committee, including investigating any "unmasking" - the revealing of USA nationals swept up in routine surveillance of foreign officials - in intelligence reports.
