Major search for 81 people missing after cyclone hits Bangladesh

Cyclone Mora that lashed Bangladesh's coastlines, forcing the evacuation of millions of people and shutting the country's main port and river transport, killed at least six people in Cox's Bazar and Rangamati before moving to India's north-east. In the coastal border district of Cox's Bazar, where the majority of the Rohingya in Bangladesh live, 17,000 houses were destroyed and 35,000 damaged, said Mohammad Ali Hossain, deputy commissioner in Cox's Bazar.

Meanwhile, at least eight villages were inundated in Cox's Bazar and Chittagong.

Two million people were evacuated before the cyclone made landfall, out of which 500,000 were moved to 3,800 cyclone shelters.

Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar came to Bangladesh fleeing violence, but now many of their temporary homes have been destroyed.

This is published unedited from the IANS feed. The cyclone has caused and rendered millions of people homeless.

The cyclonic storm, which was formed by the depression in east central Bay of Bengal, hit the coast of Bangladesh between Cox's Bazaar and the port of Chittagong, the country's meteorological department said.

Away from the camps, authorities had evacuated almost 600,000 people to cyclone shelters, schools and offices after raising the highest number 10 weather danger alert.

Sensing the severity of the cyclone, the government had evacuated nearly 2 million people in 10 vulnerable coastal districts.

About 20,000 houses in refugee camps for Rohingya were damaged, community leader Abdus Salam told AFP news agency.

INS Sumitra that was rushed for rescue operations to Bangladesh's Chittagong that was hit by Cyclone Mora, has rescued 18 persons so far.

There are an estimated 75,000 Muslim Rohingyas now living in Bangladesh, having fled persecution and violence in neighbouring Myanmar.

One UN official working with Rohingya refugees reported that numerous camp's inhabitants had remained in the camps regardless of warnings. The cyclone has already caused great floods in Srilanka killing 180 people already with more than 100 still missing.

Bangladesh is frequently hit by deadly storms between April and December.

"The winds are strong and people there live in flimsy structures, so we're anxious".
