PM Modi backs Merkel's leadership as Trump criticises Germany

Merkel today repeated her call for Europe to take control of its own destiny, but also dismissed any talk that Germany is shifting away from its old ally and pivoting East. Trump launched a salvo against German auto exports to the United States last week, saying that "the Germans are bad, very bad" during a meeting with senior European officials in Brussels, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported.

President Trump tweeted on Tuesday that the USA has "a massive trade deficit with Germany" and accused Berlin of not meeting its defense-spending commitments. "Very bad for US This will change". His censure follows a volley of criticism from Germany after the president concluded his first official tour overseas on Sunday, returning from Saudi Arabia, Israel, Brussels and then Italy for a G7 summit. Ambivalence about the relationship appears mutual to a degree. -German equation, saying Sunday that Europe "really must take our fate into our own hands" and emphasizing that the days when her continent could rely on others was "over to a certain extent".

In Brussels, Trump chastised fellow North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members and demanded they meet payment obligations. Very bad for US.

China has led worldwide calls to keep up the fight against global warming, hours before USA president Donald Trump announces whether he will pull out of the Paris climate accord.

Merkel's remarks came after a Group of Seven summit at which the Europeans couldn't reach an agreement with Trump on climate change.

Soon after her comments, Trump swiftly blasted Germany over trade imbalance. "This will change", Trump tweeted on Tuesday. Merkel herself described her diplomatic encounter with the Americans as "very hard, not to say very unsatisfactory".

"Europe must become a player active in global affairs". Now we are moving away and being associated with President Trump's America - a further tragedy, and one that will never serve our interests.... "Merkel needs to put some distance between herself and Trump, who is exceptionally unpopular in Germany", said Marcel Dirsus, a political scientist at the University of Kiel in northern Germany.

Germany's Minister for Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel also criticized President Trump on Monday, accusing him of "short sighted policies which stand against the European Union and are weakening the West". "He is not going to kick North Atlantic Treaty Organisation into touch provided people pay their way", Farage claimed.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, once President Obama's staunchest ally in Europe, has been equally unenthusiastic about the man who is now running the show in the United States. "And I regard that, far from being good for peace, actually as being very risky".

He said his administration would begin talks either to re-enter the Paris accord or to have a new deal with better terms for the United States.
