Spicer: Trump's relationship with Angela Merkel is 'fairly unbelievable'

They wonder why the leader of Germany's most influential global ally seems more willing to criticize their country than nations with questionable human rights records. "Very bad for U.S. This will change", Trump tweeted. Merkel herself described her diplomatic encounter with the Americans as "very hard, not to say very unsatisfactory".

In Rome, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said he agreed with Merkel that Europe needed to forge its own path.

European leaders were especially dismayed by Trump's refusal to reaffirm U.S. support for last year's Paris climate change accord and his failure to publicly endorse NATO's mutual defense pledge.

"We were not just sad but disappointed that a very important partner on climate change would drop out with the stroke of a pen", Altmaier told German broadcaster ARD.

Trump also purportedly criticized the German auto industry during his meeting with European Union officials.

Trump's criticism of Merkel was commonplace toward the end of his presidential campaign in 2016.

Merkel, however, had also said Germany's relationship with the USA was of "outstanding importance" but it must also engage with other important nations.

Perhaps in response, Donald Trump launched a fresh Twitter tirade this morning against Germany, accusing the country (again) of not paying its fair share of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation contributions and of running a "MASSIVE" trade deficit. Trump instead lectured North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member countries about contributing their "fair share", saying some countries owed "massive amounts of money", even if it does not appear to be true. According to Ip: "A trade surplus means a country consumes less than it produces and thus saves a lot", while a deficit means the opposite. Merkel, typically a careful speaker seen as a key defender of a united Europe, then said at a campaign event Sunday that the "times in which we could rely fully on others" are "somewhat over".

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel was blunter yesterday, slamming the United States president's "short-sighted" policies that have "weakened the West" and hurt European interests.

The remarks come as the relationship between Germany and the U.S. reaches its lowest point in recent decades.

"This takes nothing away from the importance of our trans-Atlantic ties and our alliance with the United States, but the importance we put on these ties can not mean that we abandon fundamental principles such as our commitment to fight climate change and in favor of open societies and free trade", he said.

"With change comes insecurity, skepticism. and, not infrequently, the glorification of the supposedly good old days", Merkel said.

"They continue to grow the bond that they had during their talks in the G-7", Spicer said, referring to a summit Trump attended with world leaders last week.

Days earlier, in Saudi Arabia, Trump had presided over the signing of the single largest U.S. arms deal in American history, worth $110 billion over the next decade and including ships, tanks and anti-missile systems.

"We always want that the European Union should be stronger, should be more active", Mr Modi said. "That's what the president called for".
