CR 2017: South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 96 runs

It proved to be too much for Sri Lanka, who were bowled out for 203 in chase, handing South Africa a 96-run win and two points from their group game in the ICC Champions Trophy at The Oval. He has gone past India skipper Virat Kohli, who achieved the feat in 162 innings.

Holding South Africa to a very achievable target, Sri Lanka started well to score 69 after the first eight overs.

For a while Sri Lanka attacked the chase with some hunger before Dickwella was winkled out by Morne Morkel for 41.

The Sri Lankans were still steaming when de Villiers finally made a decision to introduce Tahir in the 18th over. Tahir and paceman Chris Morris (2/32) were the best performers.

The form of Amla, who reeled off an incredible 25th century in the format - the most by a South African, surpassing AB de Villiers in the process - continues to please, while Du Plessis is also in pretty ominous touch.

Sri Lanka have a regal lineage of spiky little wicketkeeper-batsmen and Niroshan Dickwella set off at a fine lick in their reply, walloping Wayne Parnell over cover and then punting Kagiso Rabada high over midwicket. Building on that partnership, South Africa posted such a mammoth total. In that time, Amla stepped away from the Test captaincy to make way for a de Villiers-du Plessis debate, in which du Plessis eventually prevailed. Lanka were in a spot of bother but they were well ahead of the Proteas in terms of runs at that stage.

Under the governing body's Code of Conduct for the tournament, the sanctions for a serious breach - which is where a side is deemed more than two overs short of the over rate - are hefty, and costly.

"It's great to see", De Villiers added. Three balls later, Tahir trapped Chamara Kapugedara lbw.

George North excited by potential of British and Irish Lions squad
The British and Irish Lions' demanding 2017 New Zealand tour will provide confirmation of just how big the brand has become. "If they don't then I think it will be a tough old series". "They are a smart side and they will know what's coming".

Tharanga, deputising as captain for the injured Angelo Mathews, will miss Sri Lanka's remaining Group B matches against India and Pakistan.

Down the order, Kusal Perera (44 not out) gave some resistance but Sri Lanka lost wickets in a heap to be all out for 203 in 41.3 overs. Amla recorded his 25th ODI century in 151 ODI innings: no other batsman has as many quicker and no South African has more.

Upul Tharanga, won the toss and bowled at the Oval, fearful perhaps of some nibble in the air on a sunny south London morning with dark clouds still overhead after the end-of-the-world thunderstorms of the previous day. The elegant left-hander nicked a full length ball off Pradeep in the slips.

Du Plessis was dropped by Malinga when he was batting on 8, and Du Plessis capitalised on the opportunity.

Plessis pulled one from Pradeep but managed only a top- edge, which flew to the fast bowler towards long on and he grassed it.

AB de Villiers (4) followed an over later which brought David Miller to the wicket.

A late flourish from JP Duminy (38 not out) and Chris Morris (20) ensured Proteas scored 63 runs off the final seven overs to end the innings at 299 for six.
