Jeffress: Middle East peace trumps embassy move

On the campaign trail, Mr Trump repeatedly pledged that he would move the embassy from Tel Aviv to the city claimed as capital by both Israel and its Palestinian neighbours, and he appointed a USA ambassador who shares this goal.

In a statement, DeSantis called out Trump for reneging on a campaign promise DeSantis and 100 colleagues had pressed for ahead of Trump's inauguration. Trump made this decision to better negotiate in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, according to a White House statement.

Even though as he was campaigning for the US President, he promised time and again to move the American Embassy in Israel out of Tel Aviv and into Jerusalem, he has recently made it clear the matter was not so urgent, and could affect negatively the Israeli-Palestinian talks. "Leaving embassies outside of Jerusalem causes the chances for peace to recede and contributes to Palestinian fantasies that there is no connection between the Jewish people, the Jewish state, and Jerusalem".

Following in the footsteps of past presidents, Trump came to the conclusion that moving the embassy outside the context of a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians might exacerbate the conflict, White House officials said.

Trump's decision, the minister affirmed, highlights the US Administration's respect to its partners' views. "We are serious and genuine about achieving a just and lasting peace". "Yet, Israel is the only nation in the world where an American embassy is not located in its chosen capital city".

They were wearing what looked like homemade-explosive vests but Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley confirmed these were hoaxes. The tweet prompted criticism from commentators and political observers who accused Trump of opportunism at London's expense.

The statements and the speculations ended with President Trump doing exactly what all his predecessors, Democrats and Republicans, did since Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act in 1995. He was in the process of negotiating peace with the Palestinians, who also had political claims to Jerusalem.

Robert Satloff, who runs the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, says it's a move that could bring the Israelis and Palestinians "back to the debate", while avoiding anything that might upset either side too much. "Both President Abbas and Prime Minister Netanyahu assured me they are ready to reach for peace", Trump said in his weekly address on Friday, describing his first trip as president to the region. The State Department, however recommended against an embassy move, one US official said.

Although Trump signed a waiver, he could still move the embassy after six months, or issue an executive order overriding the waiver before it expires.

Israel considers Jerusalem its capital, but the Palestinians claim east Jerusalem for the capital of a future state.

Husam Zomlot, the Palestinian Authority representative in the USA, was happy with the decision, saying it removed one obstacle to negotiations.
