United Kingdom police investigate third terror attack in three months

A white van hit pedestrians on London Bridge last night, then three men got out and stabbed people in nearby Borough Market. The legal fight pits the president's authority over immigration against what lower courts have said is a policy that purported to be about national security but was meant to target Muslims.

All three male suspects were shot dead within eight minutes by police, after wearing what appeared to be explosive vests, which were later found to be fake. "My current information is that 48 people are injured...", she told reporters.

On May 22, a suicide bomber detonated a device packed with nails at Manchester Arena following an Ariana Grande concert.

Police announced the two incidents at London Bridge and Borough Market were "terrorist incidents" and warned people to avoid the area while emergency vehicles responded to the attacks. Five people were killed, including the assailant, and 40 others were injured.

At 10:08 p.m. (5:08 p.m. ET), London Metropolitan officers responded to reports of a vehicle hitting pedestrians on London Bridge. She became the first incumbent British MP to be killed since 1990.

The London Ambulance Service said via Twitter that it had taken 30 people to five hospitals across the city. One of the victims was seriously wounded, and the other two suffered slight injuries.

One eyewitness, named only as Gerrard, told the BBC he saw a man with stab wounds on the floor, before then witnessing three men repeatedly stabbing a girl at Borough Market. She said the counter-terrorism strategy would be reviewed, the election campaign would resume on Monday and the parliamentary elections would be held as planned on June 8. Police rushed to the scene and shot dead the three male attackers in the area near the bridge. Local restaurant owner Jack Applebee said he saw people running down the street and heard a female voice shout "they're stabbing everyone".

It began Saturday night when a van veered off the road and barreled into pedestrians on busy London Bridge. It all took place at a time when the terror level in the United Kingdom had been reduced to severe from critical - meaning an attack was thought highly likely though there was no knowledge of an imminent threat. It will only be defeated when we turn people's minds away from this violence - and make them understand that our values - pluralistic, British values - are superior to anything offered by the preachers and supporters of hate.

The prime minister says the incidents are being treated as a "potential act of terrorism". Flags were flying at half-mast over her Downing Street residence on Sunday morning.

As it did after the events in Westminster and Manchester, the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) issued a statement that strongly condemned Saturday's attack.

Witnesses reported seeing injured people on the ground on the bridge. The BBC showed dozens of people, evidently caught up in the attack, being escorted to safety through a police cordon with their hands on their heads.

The major political parties suspended national election campaigning after the attack but Mrs May confirmed the poll would go ahead on Thursday.

- London Bridge was closed in both directions.

Gerard Vowls, 47, told The Guardian newspaper that he saw a woman being stabbed by three men at the south end of London Bridge.

Scotland Yard said 12 people had been detained in Barking "in connection with last night's incidents" and that searches at a number of addresses in the area were continuing. "I want to know if this girl is still alive".
