Champions Trophy: India clinically outclass Pakistan in rain-hit clash

India have beat Pakistan by 124 runs in their opening game of ICC Champions Trophy 2017, at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham.

After India made 319 for three in 48 overs, the third rain stoppage of the match left Pakistan with a revised target of 289 in 41 overs when play resumed in bright sunshine.

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, like they did so often four years ago, showed their potency as an opening partnership, and while one of them struggled a little to 91 runs - unusual as it might sound when someone scores 91 - for India it was all about building that solid base, so that they could go slam-bang-thank-you-ma'am in the second half of the innings. He removed Azhar Ali, who had compiled a sedate fifty, before producing a moment of brilliance in the field.

Pakistan had a good start where Azhar Ali and Ahmed Shehzad added a total of 47 runs for the first wicket.

"Everything was under control after 40 overs but we lost the plot in the last eight", Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said.

But fellow left-arm fast bowler Wahab was hugely expensive, his wicketless 8.4 overs costing 87 runs.

This was both Asian giants´ first Group B match of the 2017 Champions Trophy, a tournament featuring the world´s top-eight one-day global teams.

India smashed 72 off their final four overs as Pakistan's attack wilted. He later would not come out to bat, having twisted his ankle. It might be safe to presume Pakistan wanted to get rid of Imad's overs when India were taking it easy: since the 2015 World Cup, they had scored 4.95 an over in the first 10. India finishes 319/3 in 48 overs. Yuvraj Singh who scored a magnificent 53 off 32 balls was adjudged the man of the match for his knock. In the 9th over, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar gave the first breakthrough to his team and took the first wicket by dismissing Shezad for 12 of 22 runs. Yuvraj also added that an India-Pakistan tie is always a crucial one.

The fielding gaffes began nearly immediately, Ahmed Shehzad fluffing a regulation stop at point to set a trend that peaked with Hasan Ali dropping Yuvraj on eight and sub-fielder Faheem Ashraf shelling Kohli on 43.

Kohli had made 43 when he was missed by substitute Fakhar Zaman, who could not hold a top-edged hook off Wahab. India bowlers Umesh Yadav took three wickets while Pandya and Jadeja took two wickets each.
