Danny Summerhays in the lead at the Memorial

"There's no sense in withdrawing today but I want the alternate to know", Mickelson said, still holding out a glimmer of hope he will be able to play.

Dufner finished at 13-under 275 for his fifth PGA Tour victory.

Justin Thomas (72) and Matt Kuchar (73) finished in a tie for fourth one shot further back. "I hit three or four shots that I nearly couldn't miss them, even though I tried on 17".

Daniel Summerhays was surprised to find himself with a three-shot lead after roaring past a faltering Jason Dufner in the third round at the Memorial tournament in Dublin, Ohio yesterday morning (Singapore time).

Dufner got back into the mix quickly when Summerhays lost his three-shot lead after four holes.

Four players had at least a share of the lead in a final round in which seven players were in the hunt.

Dufner endured a nightmare with his putter and compounded his misery by driving into a water hazard at the last for a bogey and a five-over 77, only one shot shy of the day's worst score. He played the front nine in even par, and then he came to life. He tried to play a flawless shot and barely got it out, then chipped down to 5 feet and missed the putt, making double bogey. He then hit a sand wedge onto the green and with Fowler just off the green and in position to chip in for birdie to tie for the lead, Dufner made the putt to win. And he finished impressively to do it, playing the last four holes in two under par, including a three-foot birdie on the par-4 17th when the green was as receptive as a frying pan. Dufner ended the suspense by holing the par putt.

The putt, the longest he holed all week, elicited an emphatic fist pump from the typically flat-lining, emotionless Dufner.

"Pretty good company there", Dufner said in his usual phlegmatic way after winning on a layout he didn't particularly care for until he played for the U.S. Team in the 2013 Presidents Cup. "I've had a pretty good year this year".

Renato Paratore won his first European Tour title as he held off the challenge of Chris Wood and defending champion Matthew Fitzpatrick to claim the Nordea Masters at the splendid Barseback Golf and Country Club in Sweden.

Fitzpatrick had birdied the last to sign for a 68 and set the target at ten under on a rainy day in Malmo. The final top 10 will earn 2018 LPGA Tour cards, and Koerstz Madsen also moved within a victory of an immediate LPGA Tour promotion. Rickie Fowler (72) salvaged an up-and-down day and was five behind.

Jack Nickalaus' course was not kind to him on the tough back nine. But while Dufner collapsed with a 5-over par round of 77, Summerhays made his move. 11 and 12. She's trying to match fellow Swede Annika Sorenstam's record of three victories in the event.

Leishman's week was the polar opposite of Day's, the consistent Victorian continuing to play the steady golf which sees him the best performed of the Australians on the world's top tour in 2017.
