First UN talks to save oceans kick off today

The conference will pay attention towards the utilization of the ocean and marine resources for sustainable development, and the conservation, protection and management of coastal environments.

Fiji's president of the United Nations general assembly Peter Thompson says the conference will begin the process of reversing the cycle of oceanic decline by producing practical solutions.

As a strong supporter of the adoption of Sustainable Development Goal 14, New Zealand was one of a core group of countries that supported the convening of the conference.

It also expresses alarm at the impact of climate change on the ocean.

The Ocean Conference, the first United Nations conference of its kind on the issue, is hosted by the Governments of Fiji and Sweden.

For Small Island Developing States (SIDS), such as Kiribati, this integrated approach is not just important, it is critical.

Mr. Thomson, whose home country, Fiji, is co-hosting the Conference along with Sweden, said people had been "selfish" about their children's and grandchildren's future - but now are more cognizant of the need to sustainably use natural resources.

The five-day Ocean Conference in NY begins today.

According to a government statement, the Oceans Conference aims to be the game changer that will reverse the decline in the health of our ocean for people, planet and prosperity and it will be solutions-focused with engagement from all.

Monday sees the opening of a historical United Nations conference in NY that will set the course for implementation of the ocean-related Goal 14 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). "The climate change actions taken by the worldwide community are unstoppable".

With Fiji, both the cochairman of the Oceans conference and current president of the climate negotiations, there is no better opportunity to deliver on this challenging ambition, an ambition that binds actors together in a vision to deliver on all their global commitments-Sendai, Paris, the SDGs-at the country level.

The second main event will be the Ocean Village, which will be set up at Gentry State Park in Long Island City as a "hub for all things ocean", and will celebrate art, innovation and exhibits on ocean and climate action.
