India thrash Pakistan in Champions Trophy

"We had everything under control in the Indian innings up to 40 overs, but then we lost the plot in the last eight and credit must go to the Indian batsmen", Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said.

Rohit Sharma (91) and Shikhar Dhawan (68) added 136 runs in their first wicket partnership to give India a solid start at the beginning of the innings.

India captain Virat Kohli made 81 not out, sharing a quickfire third-wicket stand with Yuvraj Singh (53) as Pakistan paid a heavy price for dropping both batsmen. And the situation was made worse since the Pakistani side kept losing wickets, without getting anywhere near to the target or the required run rate.

The fielding gaffes began nearly immediately, Ahmed Shehzad fluffing a regulation stop at point to set a trend that peaked with Hasan Ali dropping Yuvraj on eight and sub-fielder Faheem Ashraf shelling Kohli on 43. And we came back in, and so as a player who likes to play the long innings, till the end and usually plays like that for the team, it becomes very hard to find momentum every time you come back. In reply, Azhar Ali's fifty and a 33 run knock by Mohammad Hafeez were the only standout from Pakistan's chase as they were bundled out for 164. Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya claimed two wickets each. "The ICC and European Central Bank continue to place safety and security at the ICC Champions Trophy and ICC Women's World Cup this summer as the highest priority", said an ICC press release. He's also been an afflicted for India during one of their last Champions Trophy encounters.

PTV reported, Pakistan's 12-member Squad for match against India has already been announced and Faheem Ashraf - whose blitz helped the Side beat Bangladesh in high-scoring warm-up match - will also play at Edgbatson.

Pakistan's fielding was shoddy and their bowling erratic.

The Champions Trophy seems to have a love affair with Shikhar Dhawan. He needed runs under his belt.

When the breakthrough came, three balls from the halfway point, it was from a Shadab full toss which Dhawan redirected straight to midwicket.

Thanks to the big hitting by Yuvraj, Kohli and Hardik Pandya, India amassed 72 runs in the last four overs with the 46th and 48th going for 21 and 23 runs.

Meanwhile an admiring Kohli, one of the world's leading batsmen, said of Yuvraj: "I felt like a club batter next to him".

This was both Asian giants´ first Group B match of the 2017 Champions Trophy, a tournament featuring the world´s top-eight one-day worldwide teams. "Therefore, increasing Team 2's target score compensates Team 1 for the denial of some of the overs they thought they would get to bat".

Even though there were a number of candidates, Yuvraj Singh was declared player of the match for his wonderful innings.

"I got lucky and got dropped and I capitalised", said Yuvraj at the presentation ceremony.

Hosts England have a head start over the rest as they are used to playing in such conditions but other teams will have to pencil in the weather in their plans if they have to come good.

Three games have already been played in this "mini World Cup", but today's the one that everyone's been waiting for as the traditional rivals take the field.
