Mark Zuckerberg Thinks Facebook Replaces Church Work And Communities

During his speech, the Harvard alumni also fondly spoke of one of his most lovely memory at the university was when he happened to meet Priscilla during the college.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has set out his political stall during a headline speech at Harvard in which the social media pioneer criticised the global ascendancy of nationalism and authoritarianism.

When Zuckerberg returns to Harvard on Thursday, he'll finally get his degree, albeit an honorary one. Buzzfeed reports that the closed captioning system, operated by Harvard, turned the live stream of the Facebook CEO's speech into gibberish, as if it had been operated by Facebook's own speech-to-text technology. "We walked this yard less than a decade apart, studied the same ideas and slept through the same lectures", his speech said. He dropped out the following year and returned Thursday to receive an honorary degree.

Today some 1.9 billion people use Facebook each month.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg features in a long line of university dropouts who became millionaires after founding technology companies - Bill Gates and Steve Jobs among them.

With his wife, Priscilla, in the audience, he pointed to the dormitory where he launched Facebook, and remarked that meeting her there was the best thing to happen to him at the university.

He called for affordable childcare and health care that doesn't just come from an employer, and asked Harvard graduates to volunteer their time, not just their money, to people who don't have the same opportunity.

Mr Zuckerberg hilariously recalled the moment he got into Harvard as well. "We should have a society that measures progress not by economic metrics like GDP but by how many of us have a role we find meaningful. This is not a battle between nations, it's a battle of ideas" he added. "OP-ED: How Come Everyone Talks About How I Stole Facebook But Nobody Talks About How I Murdered Eduardo Saverin", says another. Without a sense of goal, people will turn towards isolationism, nationalism and authoritarianism, instead of openness and global community, he said. This, he said, has made finding objective different from past generations where it could be derived from a reliable job in a stable workforce. It's about the forces for the flow of immigration, trade, and knowledge; against the forces that would slow them down.
