Miami's Volquez pitches no-hitter against Diamondbacks

Marlins Volquez throwing no-hitter through 8 versus Arizona

MIAMI (AP) - Edinson Volquez has thrown the sixth no-hitter in Miami Marlins history, facing the minimum 27 batters and beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0 on Saturday.

Volquez's career as a well-traveled journeyman - Miami is the seventh Major League Baseball city he's called home - has featured highs before, from his one-hit shutout for the Padres in 2012 to his quality start for the Royals in Game 5 of the 2015 World Series, which Kansas City won in extra innings to clinch the title.

Volquez also dedicated his achievement to Fernandez, the late Marlins pitcher who died in a boat crash last September.

Volquez needed just 98 pitches to complete the feat.

This was MLB's 296th no-hitter, and the first since the Cubs' Jake Arrietta pulled one off against the Reds in April 2016-the sole no-hitter of last season, after a cluster of seven in 2015.

So a no-hitter wasn't on anyone's mind as Saturday's game got underway-especially once Volquez hurt his ankle in a bruising collision at first base with Arizona outfielder Rey Fuentes, the very first batter of the game. Pinch-hitter Daniel Descalso came up, and after falling behind 2-0 lead in the count, Volquez stopped for a moment, composed himself with a deep breath, and eventually got the strikeout on a 2-2 fastball. Marcell Ozuna leads the Marlins with 67 hits and 40 RBI while Dee Gordon and Giancarlo Stanton have combined for 119 hits and 49 RBI.

From there, Volquez said "it was just one of those days when you totally don't know what's going to happen". Lefty Robbie Ray, whose last outing was a complete game, shut out in Pittsburgh on May 30, halted a three-game losing streak with that victory.

Liam Hendriks (2-0) pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.

A day after being outscored by 10 runs, the A's got off to a fast start as Healy and Lowrie each hit two-run homers in the bottom of the first inning off starter Joe Ross (2-2).

The last no-hitter in Marlins history was thrown by Henderson Alvarez in 2013.

This was the fourth time the Yankees have hit four homers in an inning - they last did it October 1, 2012, against Boston.

Randall Delgado (1-1) took the loss, allowing six hits, one walk and one run in 5 1/3 innings.

While Volquez had never thrown a no-hitter before, he did toss a one-hitter July 19, 2012, in a victory for the San Diego Padres over the Houston Astros.

Volquez is the epitome of a baseball journeyman. "To do something like I did today is really special for me to dedicate the game to him".

Trainers and Marlins coaches came out to check on Volquez.

He was an All-Star in 2008, when he went 17-6 with Cincinnati.

Arizona cut its deficit to 4-2 in the third.

Shipley was called up from Triple-A Reno to make the start for Arizona.

Shipley is 5-1 with a 3.93 ERA in nine minor-league starts this year.
