Several San Diego Leaders Denounce Trump's Decision To Withdraw From Paris Agreement

Less than five months after assuming office, US President Donald J. Trump has fulfilled his ludicrous "election promise" to withdraw his country from the Paris Climate Change Agreement. More than 190 nations agreed to the pact in December 2015, pledging to hold average global temperatures to 1.5-2°C above pre-industrial levels.

Trump said the deal gives other countries an "unfair advantage" over the United States, and allows other polluting countries to continue its greenhouse gas emissions while the U.S.is forced to cut its own. "We are deeply disappointed that the United States federal government has made a decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement", he said.

The mechanics of the United States exit are complicated.

"China will stand by its responsibilities on climate change", Premier Li Keqiang told reporters on Thursday after meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel and before flying on to Brussels for meetings with European Union officials that will include how to keep the Paris agreement going without US participation.

Meanwhile, Russia will ratify the Paris climate agreement when the rules for allocating resources will be formed, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday.

Assemblyman Todd Gloria, D-San Diego, said via Twitter, "The president's cynical political decision is not only bad for our environment but a total abdication of America's global leadership". The UN body that facilitated the deal said it "cannot be renegotiated based on the request of a single party".

More than ever, Trump's disregard for the future of the planet is a call to other countries-as well private business-to do more to fill the gap created by the US's Paris exit. He said it would also lead to a reduction in cement, iron, steel, coal, natural gas and petroleum production. Sputnik News Agency is the official media partner of the forum. The United States signed the deal under former President Barack Obama in-line with his ambitious agenda against climate change.

"I think it's very hard to fill the American shoes here", says David Victor, a climate-policy expert at the University of California, San Diego.

Trump also failed to acknowledge that India's per capita carbon emissions are a mere fraction of the US's, or almost 300 million people in India still live without reliable access to electricity, while misstating that India's participation in the accords was contingent on receiving "billions and billions and billions" of dollars in aid.

Ford spokeswoman Christin Baker said on Thursday the No.2 U.S. automaker believes "climate change is real, and remain deeply committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our vehicles and our facilities". The idea that climate change isn't real, or it's overblown, or it's God's Plan, or whatever, there's nothing we can do about it, are among the most deeply held Republican dogma. Long a skeptic of climate change-calling it a "hoax" propagated by the Chinese to suppress USA manufacturing-this is the latest, and perhaps most significant, action taken by Trump under his "America First" doctrine, calling the agreement unfair to American workers and the economic impacts of "draconian".

"Even with the Trump administration in place, the global trend toward renewable energies is continuing - including in the United States", Höhne says.
