The big question the White House won't answer

The cable networks covered the political fallout from President Trump's decision on the Paris accord, but science got short shrift. But despite its bad record in the past, China's investments in recent years in solar and wind energy have been much larger than those of any other country.

That is, that Trump is judged by different standards than previous USA presidents for doing the same things they've done.

Trump's decision, which has been roundly denounced by the worldwide community, was based on his belief that it "did not serve the American people", Tillerson said in Sydney.

Yesterday, Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan described President Donald Trump's decision on Thursday as a "great pity".

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency Administrator refused Sunday to say whether he and Trump discussed the world's rising temperatures before the President withdrew from the global effort.

The pullout will align the United States with Syria and Nicaragua as the world's only non-participants in the accord. It will undermine the most significant and comprehensive coordinating mechanism for global action to combat climate change that we have. Trump said he's willing to renegotiate and re-enter the agreement when he believes it better serves the interests of Americans.

Whatever the industry, companies will be reluctant to change plans based exclusively on the withdrawal from the climate agreement because the pendulum could swing back. "I can not support a deal that punishes the United States, the world's leader in environmental protection, while imposing no meaningful obligations on the world's leading polluters...."

Pruitt - who advised Trump to withdraw from the Paris accord - insisted that his discussions with the president focused on whether or not the accord was good for the United States, and that Trump's personal views on the subject had not come up.

"The President has indicated the climate changes".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the E.U.'s most powerful leader, pledged "more decisive action than ever" to protect the climate after Trump's "highly regrettable" decision. As a result, United States withdrawal from the agreement was a wholly symbolic gesture.

The Paris Agreement sought to limit average temperature rises to no more than 2C above pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts to keep them to 1.5C. Without the USA, the world's second-biggest emitter which had vowed to reduce emissions by 26pc-28pc, it increases to 3.6C.

'If we don't do anything, we might shoot over 5 degrees or more and that would be catastrophic, ' said John Reilly, the co-director of the program, adding that MIT's scientists had had no contact with the White House and were not offered a chance to explain their work.

California leads the way with its climate policies. "I would tell Trump that here the misery is caused by climate change, and if he doesn't pay attention, the United States will be touched one day by these problems, too". Energy companies including BP and Royal Dutch Shell have spent billions researching clean energy, while Walmart claims to save $1bn a year by utilising renewable power.

Brown's week-long China trip will take him to Chengdu, Nanjing and Beijing, where he will host a clean energy forum with Chinese authorities and participate in climate-related events.
