Emmanuel Macron and Vladimir Putin, disagreements for cooperation

The two leaders discussed the relationship between their nations, the situation in Syria, LGBT rights in Chechnya among other issues for three hours in the Palace of Versailles, reports the DW.

Mr Macron said the Russian leader told him he had attempted to "establish the complete truth on the activities of local authorities" but did not provide details.

Addressing his presidential election campaign, he said: "Russia Today and Sputnik were agents of influence in this campaign and, on several occasions, disseminated lies about myself and my campaign".

Putin rejected accusations of election meddling as unfounded press speculation.

But in an apparent warning to Assad and Russian Federation, he said the use of chemical weapons in Syria would be a "red line" for his presidency and would draw an "immediate response" from France.

France invited Putin to the opening of a exhibit on the 300th anniversary of Russian Czar Peter the Great's trip to Paris just two weeks ago, shortly after Macron was elected.

During the interview, other issues were debated such as the alleged Russian interference in the U.S. and French elections, another accusation launched by Western nations.

"I will be constantly vigilant on these issues", Macron said.

Macron said he had a frank exchange of views with Putin, and that the two had aired their disagreements on a number of subjects.

In an interview with the newspaper during his visit to France, Putin brushed off concerns voiced by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation about his regime, saying that "You frighten yourself".

Macron said last week that he wanted to bring together soon the "Normandy format" which groups the leaders of Russia, Germany, France and Ukraine and which met first in Normandy, north-west France.

Russian President Vladimir Putin during an interview in France on Tuesday brushed aside accusations of Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election.

Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russia Today that the government "does not agree" with Macron's comments.

The topic then shifted to Syria and the chemical bombing allegedly perpetrated by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. He had been due to attend the inauguration of the cathedral in October, but he cancelled the trip to France after then President Francois Hollande accused Russian Federation of war crimes in Syria and refused to give him a red carpet welcome.

On his part, Putin warned that sanctions against Russian Federation over Ukraine would "in no way" resolve the crisis.

He confirmed that Mr Putin had agreed to a "very regular monitoring" of the curtailing of gay rights in Chechnya, where hundreds of gay men were rounded up, sent to prison and tortured.

Putin later went on to visit a newly opened Russian Orthodox cathedral in Paris.
