Police say injured tally from Turin stampede rises to 1000

People had been gathered in one of the city's squares, and most were Juventus fans watching their team in the Champions League final.

Chaos ensued around ten minutes before the end of the match, with several people shouting that a bomb had gone off, AFP reports. Fearing a terror attack, groups of fans began running out from the venue.

During the second half of the match, which Real Madrid went on to win 4-1, video cameras showed a sudden rush in the middle of the crowd in San Carlo square, and then a violent surge that flung people against barriers.

A barrier caused injuries to people by giving way by the entrance to an underground auto park, and three of the seven that were seriously injured are now in a critical condition.

At least one person was carried away on a stretcher and medics treated fans in the square for cuts and other injuries sustained in the near-stampede.

The incident compounded a miserable night for fans of Turin-based Juventus, who lost the final 4-1 to Real Madrid.

Local media said that seven people, including a seven-year-old child, were seriously injured.

It has also been reported that a railing at the top of a stairwell leading to an underground vehicle park gave way, causing people to run to safety.

The stampede which followed caused minor injuries to what was initially thought to be around 50 supporters, though Rai TV is reporting 400 injuries.

Another fan, Giulio, said he had been knocked to the ground. "I don't have the slightest idea what happened". "We just panicked and tried to get out of there".
