Racing needs all the personalities, polite and rude

One Twitter follower noted that undergoing skin-cancer surgery wasn't exactly the most fun way to celebrate the victory, to which Johnson replied that it affected his post-race "mojo", which if you're curious what that means, he added: "I was told no alcohol 12 hours prior to going under the knife". And also because Yarborough won - a lot - which is what Johnson has been doing also. It took a little bit of scrambling from Mike Joy and the team in the booth but they figured out quickly enough that Jimmie Johnson was indeed the race victor. "I swear, I only dreamed of winning a race". It was also his 11th win at Dover, topping his own record at the track and grouping him with Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip as the only driver to win 11 or more times at a single track. After making a gear change between qualifying and the race, Johnson had to start at the back of the field Sunday, his second-worst starting position in 31 races at Dover.

Whatever the reasons are, they should be a minor footnote in how the spring Dover race has become one of the top must-watch races of the season. "The Spring race in 2016, which featured an 18-car wreck on a restart and spirited duel to the finish with Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott and eventual victor Matt Kenseth, was voted as the top race of the year by a USA Today fan poll".

Kyle Larson took off in clean air on the Lap 126 restart at Dover International Speedway.

"I remember going to a race in Oklahoma with my parents, my brother, we're driving across the country and we pull into a Hardee's", Johnson said. He then survived his first 600-mile race in the Coca-Cola 600 and finished just outside of the top 10 in 11th place. A lot of times we have been a 10th-place auto and weren't able to get the finish we needed.

Johnson and the 78-year-old Yarborough are the only drivers in NASCAR history to win three consecutive championships.

Eventually, however, Dillon succumbed to stronger cars, and his race ended in a 10-car pileup on the backstretch on the first lap of overtime.

It was a hard day from the start for Johnson.

On Sunday NASCAR superstar Jimmie Johnson made all kinds of history. "We got caught on that caution there with, I don't know, 60 or so laps to go and we pitted".

Larson, who led a race-high 241 laps, had to settle for his fifth second-place finish of the season.

"It needed to stay green there at the end", Larson said. "Jimmie is the best of our time, probably best of all time. Two left-side tires, I was able to lead a lot of laps".

"I haven't had much luck in my NASCAR career", Larson said.

Larson finished second, just like at last year's Dover event, with Martin Truex Jr - who won the first two stages - pitting very late to claim third.

A wreck behind Johnson drew a caution, but Johnson already reached the overtime line, and he was declared the victor over Larson, Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Newman and Chase Elliott in the top five.

INDYCAR: Graham Rahal completed a doubleheader sweep in the Detroit Grand Prix, winning Race 2 to become the series' first two-time victor this season. The rest of the top 10 was Jamie McMurray, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and Danica Patrick.
