Trump Signs Waiver Delaying Embassy Move to Jerusalem

That language is standard for waivers signed by Trump's precedessors under the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro, who served under President Barack Obama, said that Trump's decision was the right one but that he hopes Thursday's waiver is the last signed by a U.S. president.

Foreign countries now have their embassies in the Israeli commercial capital Tel Aviv since they do not recognise Israel's unilateral claim of control over all of Jerusalem.

Prominent Jewish groups and Israeli officials expressed anger and disappointment over President Donald Trump's decision to sign a six-month waiver of the Jerusalem Embassy Act, a move which directly contradicts the president's campaign promises to immediately move the USA embassy to Jerusalem. But he has repeatedly stated his intention is to move the embassy.

On the campaign trail, Trump vowed to move the embassy to Jerusalem - a priority for the Republican evangelical base as well as many of his Jewish supporters - on Day One of his administration. He has since, however, stalled on his pledge. "For him, it is a matter of when not if the United States embassy is moved to Jerusalem". Two decades later, Israel captured east Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast War and annexed it, though without global recognition. We invite you to join us for this wonderful opportunity.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who welcomed the USA leader to the city last week, expressed disappointment at the delay but made it clear he still values Mr Trump's support.

"Having the us embassy in Jerusalem is the right thing to do", says Christian apologist Alex McFarland.

"We know that peace is possible if we put aside the pain and disagreements of the past and commit together to finally resolving this crisis", he said.

Trump has reportedly been under pressure not to change the location of the US Embassy in Israel by Arab and European leaders precisely because such a move could hinder the negotiations with the Palestinians.

Jordan, which oversees the holy Islamic and Christian sites in east Jerusalem that is envisaged as the future capital of the Palestinian state, has been repeatedly warning against the relocation of the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

President Mahmoud Abbas' spokesman Nabil Abu Rdeneh said the decision is an "important positive step" that illustrates the seriousness of the United States in promoting peace. Israel has controlled the entirety of Jerusalem since the 1967 Six-Day War and claims it as their capital, though that isn't recognized on the global stage.

Hussam Zomlot, the Palestinian envoy in Washington, said the move "gives peace a chance".

The decision comes on the heels of Trump's first worldwide trip, during which he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. He signed a waiver Thursday to keep the embassy in Tel Aviv for the time being.

The embassy is now located in Tel Aviv.

Abdullah in particular expressed deep concern that moving the U.S. Embassy would spark unrest among his country's large Palestinian population.

Today, Gilboa says, the average Israeli is more interested in the U.S. finally allowing Israelis to travel to the U.S. visa-free - so they won't have to go through arduous visa questioning at the U.S. Embassy, no matter which Israeli city it's located in.
