Italian news site Corriere Della Sera claimed that Zaghba had been previously been stopped in 2016 at Bologna airport, where his mother lived, when trying to catch a flight bound for Syria via Turkey.

Zaghba was reportedly working in a London restaurant and had not been seen in Italy since 2016.

British police investigating Saturday's attack on London Bridge on Tuesday named the third assailant as Youssef Zaghba, a 22-year-old Italian national of Moroccan descent who was from east London.

The Metropolitan Police said on Tuesday that the 22-year-old had yet to be formally identified but detectives were confident it was him and had informed his family.

Police Release The Names Of Two Suspected Terrorists In The London Attacks
Saturday's attack was the third in as many months involving suspects who had been on the radar of British authorities. But the issue has stuck with May, who was home secretary for six years before she became prime minister last year.

Police said Zaghba had not been a subject of interest for them or for the MI5 domestic intelligence agency.

The attackers, wearing fake suicide vests, were shot dead by eight officers. The Islamic gym where Butt worked out said Tuesday they had seen nothing of concern during his time there.

Defending the actions of the security services, he added: "At any one time MI5 and police are conducting around 500 active investigations, involving 3,000 subjects of interest".

Butt was among three men who rammed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and then stabbed people in nearby Borough Market.

Transport for London (TfL) confirmed Butt worked for London Underground for just under six months as a trainee customer services assistant, leaving in October previous year.

They stressed that while they believe they know the attackers' identities, "formal identification is yet to take place".

Italy´s main newspapers said Zaghba´s mother was from Bologna and his father was Moroccan.

Meanwhile, further searches were carried out in Ilford in east London overnight as the police inquiry continues. Much of the area around London Bridge remained cordoned off as commuters struggled to work in the driving rain.

A minute of silence was held nationwide at 11 a.m.to honour all the victims.

Twelve people who were arrested in east London in the wake of the murderous rampage have been released without charge.

A search warrant is being executed at an address in Barking.

Khuram Butt, a 27-year-old father of two, had been known to police.
