Warriors' Kerr back on sideline to coach Game 2

The Cleveland Cavaliers fell to the Golden State Warriors in game-2 of the NBA Finals, 132-113, Sunday, June 4, 2017, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

At this point, it's fair to mention the Cavs were down 2-0 to the Warriors previous year and, for that matter, the familiar 3-1. Bottom line, the Cavaliers were engaged in a way they were not in Game 1, and while the Warriors pushed the lead out to 10 at the 2:41 mark, their eight first-quarter turnovers - double how many they had in all of Game 1 - helped the Cavaliers stay close.

Game Three is in Cleveland on Wednesday (Thursday NZT).

This time though, they've come back armed with Kevin Durant who has taken their game to a whole new level and it's not just in the scoring department.

"Right now, it means nothing, but it will mean something".

Kerr said: "It's been a great run, but none of that matters unless we can finish the job with this series".

It is performance art, and watching Durant and Steph Curry together occasionally moves the viewer to a place near levitation.

On a day of many records from both sides of the court, Golden State edged a contest that took them a step closer to avenging the defeat of last season: LeBron James passed Jerry West for most assists in NBA Finals history to go 2nd on the list, Stephen Curry joined the exclusive list of players with his first triple-double in the NBA Finals, a 30-point one at that.

Yes, the Cavaliers trailed 2-0 in last year's Finals, too.

Warriors stomp Cavs in Kerr's return, take 2-0 lead
But James answered questions in front of his locker, instead, reassuring the gathered throng that everything was hunky. Last couple weeks have been good in terms of running practice, film sessions, coaches meetings, that kind of stuff.

Thompson emerged from a postseason-long shooting funk to score 22 points with four 3-pointers while playing more stellar defense and pulling down seven rebounds for the Warriors, who shot 18 for 43 from deep.

Still, the Cavs say they are not discouraged. Tristan Thompson again had a brutal game and the 3-point shot that was the Cavs' calling card all season failed them. Trust me, we know, it was 2-0 past year and we lost.

"He reminded us it's going to get even tougher going to Cleveland". So they won two games.

Golden State improved to 14-0 this postseason to keep alive a chance of becoming the first group to go unbeaten all the way to a title.

Quotable - Kyrie Irving, on the team's mindset heading back to Cleveland ... We love his presence.

The Cavs followed a zero-steal outing in Game 1 with a whopping 15 steals in Game 2, garnering 11 more shot attempts throughout the game while committing only nine of their own. "We were much more physical today than we were in Game 1, and we forced them to 20 turnovers. Every mistake you make defensively, they make you pay, and you saw that", Lue said.

But the Warriors regrouped during a full timeout and Kevin Durant's three-point play highlighted a 7-0 answer to put Golden State back up by 11. "He's been such a big piece of our success the last three years, obviously", James said. LeBron will not defeat Golden State by himself, he needs his teammates, and it has to start with Game 3. Only former Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson had eight prior finals triple doubles.

Love gave the Cavs a needed second offensive threat with 27 points in Game 2; but against a team filled with a pair of former MVPs in Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, two other 2017 All-Stars in Draymond Green and Klay Thompson and several role players who have made key contributions, it wasn't been almost enough.

But after being so close past year and falling short, the Warriors know how hard the next two will be.
