He led 27 laps, more than any other rookie, before suffering an engine failure.

"To drive around Monaco for a sixth place, seventh place, even a fifth place". He was ultimately classified as finishing in 24th.

Alonso made a decision to skip the Monaco Grand Prix, where he was replaced by Jenson Button, to compete in the Indy 500 as he goes for motorsport's illustrious "Triple Crown".

Takuma Sato, victor of the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500, poses for photographers, Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at the Empire State building in NY.

"I was disappointed not to finish the race, because in every race you compete, you want the checkered flag", Alonso said Sunday.

"Takuma was a lot of help, coming from F1. It's unbelievable. I couldn't do what he was doing (on the closing laps)". "I'm extremely happy for the final result".

Takuma Sato isn't just the elder statesman among Japanese IndyCar drivers, he's the only Asian driver left in the field.

Sato used his appearances to again raise awareness for the thousands of people in Japan who remain displaced from the 2011 natural disaster and tsunami that killed more than 15,000 people.

It's no surprise that Alonso has been facing engine woes with his McLaren auto in F1 and it seemed the troubles weren't ready to leave him at Indy 500. "We definitely had some very well-performing engines in today's race".

"I was pointing in the right direction into (Turn) One", said Sato, who was congratulated in victory lane by Franchitti. He said Sunday's win was a dream come true. Obviously, you prepare for the race.

Sato, who raced in F1 between 2002 and 2008 before switching to the American series, took the lead on lap 195 before successfully fending off the challenge of veteran Brazilian Castroneves. Michael is the only driver among the top 21 Indianapolis 500 lap leaders never to have won at least once.

But there was an even bigger heart-stopping moment when, just over 50 laps into the 200-lap race, Scott Dixon's vehicle flew through the air before ripping in half after colliding with driver Jay Howard.

Dixon was involved in a horrific accident early in the race.
