German Rock Festival to Resume after Terror-Threat Scare

Germany's biggest rock festival will resume after being disrupted by fears of a possible "terrorist threat" which have proved to be unfounded, the organisers said Saturday.

The festival was evacuated on Friday evening after Koblenz police said they were in possession of "concrete elements, in the light of which a possible terrorist threat can not be ruled out".

"After intensive searches and sweeps of the complete festival site by the police the suspicion of a potential terrorist threat has not been confirmed", the organizers posted on their website.

"Set-up for day 2 of Rock am Ring has commenced and the programme is going to be resumed in the early afternoon".

Rhineland-Palatinate government spokesman Joachim Winkler told the dpa news agency that there were tips of a possible terrorist attack and that the Rock am Ring festival was shut down on its opening night as a precaution.

Festival organizers say they hope to be able to go ahead with the program Saturday.

The rock festival's official Facebook page thanked fans for their "incredibly disciplined behaviour" and "exemplary cooperation". "Since a threat could not be ruled out, all necessary measures were taken immediately".

Today's incident follows a deadly bombing last month at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, U.K.; 22 fans were killed.

Police continued their investigation after seizing items belonging to the suspects. "We ask all festival visitors to leave".

Besides Rammstein and Liam Gallagher, British acts Bastille and Rag'n'Bone Man had also been due to perform on the main stage on Friday evening.

The event, which features such bands this year as System Of A Down, Sum 41, The Living End, and Airbourne, is one of the largest music festivals in Germany.

Last year, the third and final day of the "Rock am Ring" was cancelled after lightning strikes injured 80 people, some seriously.
