Jelena Ostapenko to face Simona Halep in surprise French Open final

Romania's Simona Halep reacts as she defeats Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic during their semifinal match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium, Thursday, June 8, 2017 in Paris.

Halep, who is seeded third, had taken the first set 6-4.

With Bacsinszky serving at 3-5 Ostapenko, coiled like a spring, brought up two match points with an unstoppable backhand return that cleaned the baseline then smote a rasping forehand return victor that left her opponent flat-footed.

Ostapenko then broke early in the second set but Bacsinszky won the last four games and levelled the match when her opponent double faulted.

Bacsinszky required treatment on her right knee after dropping serve to trail 4-3, but it did not hinder the 30th seed as once again there was a swift break back, Ostapenko the architect of her own downfall with three unforced errors and a double fault.

But Halep responded with a break of her own while Pliskova had a chance to tie the match while serving, and then finished out the match by holding serve in the final game. Myskina's opponent - another Russian, Elena Dementieva - made it the first French Open final since 1981 with two participants making their debuts in a Grand Slam title match. But 20 years ago, he said Thursday, he came to Roland Garros hoping "to win one match".

"I was just trying to be calm and ... play my game", Ostapenko said, "and just enjoy every moment".

The 25-year-old Halep already is guaranteed to move into second in the WTA rankings, but she can replace Angelique Kerber at the top if she wins on Saturday.

Ostapenko is yet to win a World Tour title.

With the women's game in need of a new injection of pizazz in the absence of pregnant 23-times major champion Serena Williams and with Maria Sharapova just starting back from a doping ban, Ostapenko has game and personality to sell tickets. The number two seed recovered in the second set however. I expect her to give everything she has, to hit all the balls, to play with confidence.

Ostapenko's forehand, which this fortnight has averaged three miles per hour faster than Andy Murray's, had helped her blast her way past Sam Stosur and Wozniacki in the previous two rounds.

The 6-foot-1 right-hander - whose twin sister Krystyna is a left-handed pro - struggles with her movement on the dirt and prefers to play quicker points.

When quizzed over which team he turned out for, Ostapenko replied: "I honestly don't know which team, but I think something like - no, I don't know, actually. I'm just happy with the way I celebrated my birthday", Ostapenko said.

Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland is facing unseeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Ostapenko won the first set 7-6 (4).

Her successful all-or-nothing approach saw her fire 50 winners and 45 unforced errors against Bacsinszky.

Didn't really show. She surged in the tiebreaker, winning four of the last five points and ending it with a swinging backhand volley victor. "I didn't have it from the serve, so that's probably the key (why) she won the third set".
