Defense Attorney Speaks on Bill Cosby Trial

Jurors in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial are hearing about telephone conversations in which he told the mother of his chief accuser that he'd fondled her daughter's breasts and genitals after giving her pills.

"Yes", replied Constand, though she said the bath salts were not from her, but from a friend. Cosby, a university trustee, followed the athletics department closely, she said.

Andrea Constand, who had stuck up a friendship with Mr Cosby, said she accepted the blue pills after the comedian told her they were herbal supplements that would help her to relax. Constand initially told police about the incident in 2005, but the then-district attorney declined to press charges against Cosby.

Constand got "aggressive" and "rude" with him on the phone like a concerned mother, she said, because she thought Cosby was "manipulating" the truth. Cosby lawyer Angela Agrusa lashed into Constand on cross-examination.

Agrusa noted that Constand and Cosby exchanged numerous gifts, and that the comedian gave her cashmere sweaters, perfume and a $225 hair dryer.

She allegedly told investigators she had known Cosby six months at the time of the assault, but actually knew him for more than a year. "And I felt him take my hand, place it on his penis and move it back and forth". In court on Tuesday, Constand said she had been alone with Cosby before the incident.

Hours later, she called Cosby again, and after not reaching him, it was then she filed a police report.

And she trusted him as a friend and mentor.

Constand's testimony is expected to continue when the trial resumes in Norristown, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday.

"The man that I've known as a child was amusing and witty and smart and philanthropic and full of advice", she told ABC News. Andrea Constand, center, walks to the courtroom during Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pa., Tuesday, June 6, 2017. Cosby's attorneys have said the pills he gave Constand were Benadryl and that their sexual activity was consensual.

Agrusa went through phone records on that March date, when Constand and Cosby had attended a Philadelphia high school fundraising dinner, which showed a number of calls during the hours when she would have been unconscious.

"I don't really remember how dim the lights were, but I did have to eat my dinner", Constand said. She met him when she ran operations for the women's basketball team at Philadelphia's Temple University (of which Cosby is an alumnus and donor) in 2002. Another time, she said, he placed his hand on her thigh.

Agrusa seemed to needle Constand over a three-month discrepancy between the date she originally said Cosby sexually assaulted her, January 2004, and the revised date she gave police in another interview months later.

Cosby has faced sexual assault allegations from dozens of women, though Constand's accusation is the only one to lead to criminal charges.

His sweater-wearing portrayal of Dr. Cliff Huxtable made him a household name and one of the most beloved comedians in the world.

The mostly white jury is composed of seven men and five women, according to WHYY's Bobby Allyn.

Lawyers in the case estimate the trial will last about two weeks.
