Three US soldiers killed by Afghan commando

A United States air strike killed at least two Afghan policemen and wounded four others in Helmand, officials said Saturday, in apparently the first "friendly fire" incident since American Marines returned to the southern province in April.

"Today around noon an Afghan commando opened fire on U.S. troops in Achin district, killing two American soldiers", provincial spokesman Attaullah Khogyani told AFP.

Meanwhile U.S forces in Afghanistan released a statement and confirmed the death of Afghan border soldiers during overnight operations in Helmand.

A group of around 300 U.S. Marines arrived in the embattled province in April to support struggling Afghan forces in their battle against the Taliban.

Such "green-on-blue" attacks - when Afghan soldiers or police turn their guns on worldwide troops - have happened before in Afghanistan. "It's hardly ever about working closely with the Afghan people to find solutions that will work for them over the long haul". The U.S. military in a statement apologized for the deaths and said the incident was under investigation.

The Afghan commando was shot down after he reportedly opened fire on the USA soldiers.

Kazem, an Afghan army soldier, told Al Jazeera that such attacks are sometimes planned by the Taliban, but most of the time it is caused by minor disagreements between the two sides.

"On my way here, I was informed that USA service members were killed and wounded in an attack in Afghanistan", Pence said.

For example, the use of "guardian angels" has become standard in Afghanistan.

There are 8,400 American troops in Afghanistan training, advising and assisting the Afghan military in its fight against the Taliban. In Kabul, at least four protesters were killed by Afghan armed forces.

"We are aware of an incident in Eastern Afghanistan". They include special forces who conduct separate counter-terrorism operations.

The Trump administration is in the middle of a review of the overall US strategy in Afghanistan.
