Britain: Establishment plans upended as left campaign ends Tory majority

It should have been a slam dunk for May, whose Conservative Party was 20 points ahead in the opinion polls, and who needed a stronger hand to push through the hard realities of "Brexit", the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union, which passed by a razor-thin voter margin previous year.

PARKER: It's a really unusual one because it wasn't just the opinion polls. Ruth Davidson, leader of Conservatives in Scotland, where the party did well, said the results showed that the Conservatives should prioritise good trade relations with the European Union. And after that, she never really recovered.

"As I reflect on the result, I will reflect on what we need to do in the future to take the party forward", May said before adding "I obviously wanted a different result". And there was a big surge of young voters for Jeremy Corbyn, which was quite an invigorating thing to see in this country. Will the Democratic Unionists get something for their pains? Not what the establishment and their media mouthpieces insist they should want.

PARKER: Well, they will for sure.

May announced the party would try to work with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, an alliance that is fraught with difficulties. And the British government sends money to Northern Ireland.

In a separate development, Paul Nuttall, the Ukip leader resigned after his party failed to secure a single seat. A buoyant Corbyn piled on pressure for May to resign, saying people have had enough of austerity politics and cuts in public spending. But there will be money involved for certain. Conservative seats are now more heavily concentrated in Brexit-supporting areas and most of the party's new English MPs will represent voters who want to leave the European Union as quickly and cleanly as possible. "I would have thought that's enough".

"I'm afraid we ran a pretty terrible campaign", Ms Soubry said.

The misjudgment by the Conservative Party, moreover, is the second one in just two years. There could have been a leadership contest which would have exposed all the old Tory divisions on Europe.

249 Acandidate named Lord Buckethead (pictured) ran against PM Theresa May in her Maidenhead constituency in the general election.

Theresa May's Labour rival Jeremy Corbyn (R), known for his life-wing views, was once written off as a no-hoper, unable to even muster support from his party's MPs. So as a result, Theresa May is in there, propped up but much weakened.

SIEGEL: Should we assume that Brexit is a done deal? It's not going to be revisited no matter how this election sorts out?

"Clearly, they weren't the right people and therefore, by default, to me that means the whole leadership organisation just isn't functioning properly because it is not responding". A "soft" Brexit would remove Britain as a member of the European Union, but permit it to remain in the single market.

She said Brexit talks would begin on June 19 as scheduled, the same day as the formal reopening of parliament.

That did not help May, who in her previous role as interior minister for six years had overseen cuts in the number of police officers.
