British PM Theresa May says she has no intention of resigning

Yesterday, May declared her intention to lead a government with the support of the Northern Ireland MPs of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) - describing the tie-up as a government of "certainty". "And I am sorry for all those candidates and hardworking party workers who were not successful, but also particularly sorry for those colleagues who were MPs and ministers who contributed so much to our country and who lost their seats and did not deserve to lose their seats", she said in a televised interview from Downing Street.

A SENIOR Democratic Unionist has said it is "much too early" to talk of a formal agreement with a minority Conservative government. These would be likely to include increases in funding for Northern Ireland. That could prove hard should Britain exit the customs union, as Mrs May plans.

"I asked for a categoric assurance that if any deal or scoping deal was done with the DUP there would be absolutely no rescission of LGBTI rights in the rest of the United Kingdom, in Great Britain, and that we would use any influence that we had to advance LGBTI rights in Northern Ireland".

"We'll be making sure we get the best deal for all of Northern Ireland". That has been turned on its head, with the Conservatives losing their majority in the House of Commons after an opposition surge created one of the most dramatic reversals of political fortune in Britain's electoral history.

It called for a "frictionless border" with the Republic of Ireland, "ease of trade" with the rest of the European Union and a comprehensive free-trade and customs agreement with the bloc once Britain leaves in 2019. "Not just here in Northern Ireland but right across our United Kingdom", she said.

The DUP generally favours a "soft Brexit" rather than the "hard Brexit" sought by May, and it wants to preserve its open border with the Republic of Ireland, an European Union member.

Former United States Special Envoy for Northern Ireland Richard Haass yesterday expressed concern, saying with Brexit and the DUP going into government, the political future of Northern Ireland was "suddenly highly uncertain".

A deal with the Conservatives would put one of the most socially conservative parties in Europe in government.

Numerous party members are also uncomfortable with the kind of deal that will have to be struck with the DUP, a socially conservative party that takes an opposing stance on issues such as abortion and same sex marriages.

It's also true that this was the first British election since 1970 - that's right, 1970 - in which both the major parties won over 40 percent of the popular vote.

Voters in Scotland made their views clear at the polls, sending a resounding message to the Scottish National Party, which lost more than 20 seats. She announced the election with a 24-point lead over Jeremy Corbyn's Labour, according to the polls, who often underestimate Conservative support.

'Make this election the naughtiest thing Theresa May has ever done'.

The shift also threatens to deepen a crisis in regional politics in the province of 1.8 million people.

The Prime Minister met with the Queen this lunchtime to confirm that a deal with the DUP is in place, but what does this mean?
