Champions Trophy 2017: Rain washes out Australia-Bangladesh tie

Bangladesh were bowled out for a lowly 182 and Smith's side were looking comfortable at 83 for one when rain stopped play just before 6.45pm.

Both teams made one change, with Australia spinner Adam Zampa coming in for John Hastings, while Bangladesh opted for Mehedi Hasan in place of Mosaddek Hossain.

Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, lived up to his billing as one of the world´s best batsmen with a superb hundred in their Group A opener against Australia at Edgbaston on Friday.

"Their batsmanship is ridiculously unbelievable, they know the game inside out and it's a master class when they get going".

The result leaves Australia with two points after two games played in Group A and nearly certainly needing to beat England in their final game to reach the semi-finals. Steve Smith's aim now, with rain forecast, will be to ensure his side are ahead on DLS after 20 overs - the minimum required for a match.

Here, they had the upper hand as they calmly moved towards Bangladesh's total.

David Warner was 40 not out and Smith 21no when play was halted, with Aaron Finch the only man to fall, for 19.

Warner, who took eight years to reach the 4000-run mark, also equalled the record of Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who reached the landmark in 93rd ODI innings like the left-hander.

"A little bit frustrating", Smith said of that missed opportunity. They were briefly set a revised target of 166 from 43 overs, but further rain brought a halt to proceedings at 21:21 BST.

As well as the elements, Bangladesh had Tamim Iqbal to thank after he followed up his 128 against England with 95 in south London.

He took 16 runs from a Moises Henriques over, launching the ball into the crowd for six before striking boundaries to either side of the ground.

Without Tamim, Bangladesh would have been in tatters, but he maintained his one-man show by blasting two sixes off Head.

Replying to New Zealand's 291, Australia had been reduced to 53-3 after nine overs when the bad weather arrived.

"It's about trying to get that win to get through to that next stage, but to also try and find a few weak points in some of their players heading into the summer as well".

Bangladesh went down to England while Australia had to face a no result in the rain-washout against the Kiwis.

Two balls later, Starc yorked Mortaza.

Bangladesh need to win this game to avoid becoming the first team to exit the tournament. Bangaldesh are winless after falling to England while Australia's game against New Zealand was washed out.

"But I think they did the best job they could, and the umpires said it was an 8.30 start, so you've got to do what the umpires say".
