Iran slams Donald Trump's 'repugnant' response to Tehran attacks

Attackers raid Iran parliament and mausoleum, up to seven dead: media

Two places that are of great symbolic value to the Iran's political history-the tomb of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Islamic Republic's founder and first supreme leader, in the south, and the Parliament in the heart of downtown Tehran-were attacked by terrorist groups. Iran is a majority-Shiite nation, and the Islamic State is a Sunni group that often targets Shiite Muslims. Profile pictures of corpses and their names were released but their surnames have been kept a secret due to security and privacy concerns for their families. "We still can not judge that Saudi Arabia has had a role in this terrorist incident".

At least 40 were wounded and one of the attackers reportedly blew himself up as police surrounded the building he was in.

An Iranian news report says that Tehran is investigating the potential role of Saudi Arabia in Wednesday's deadly dual militant attacks in Tehran.

But supporters of the campaigns in Syria and Iraq have also been taking to social media to say the Tehran attacks show why they are necessary.

Iran initially said a dozen victims died; it's unclear whether the toll announced Thursday includes the five attackers.

Commuters in the Iranian capital noticed police on street corners and motorcycles, more than usual as dawn broke. "We can not yet make a judgement and therefore we are studying the subject", Iran's intelligence minister Mahmoud Alavi said. Authorities said the death count had risen to 17 and scores were wounded.

Trump's statement is "counter-productive and further narrows the opportunity for engagement between the USA and Iran on countering a common enemy", said Ellie Geranmayeh, senior fellow with the European Council on Foreign Relations.

In offering condolences to the people of Iran after the attacks, Trump warned that "states that sponsor terrorism risk falling victim to the evil they promote". It has also deployed forces from areas of central, northern, and eastern Iran to Syria, however, and the availability of those forces is unlikely to be affected by this attack unless the regime launches a country-wide security crackdown, which seems at the moment to be unlikely.

That was condemned by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who tweeted: "Repugnant WH (White House) statement... as Iranians counter terror backed by USA clients".

Mohammad Javad Zarif responded on Twitter, saying: "Repugnant White House statement.Iranian people reject such United States claims of friendship".

Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards have pointed the finger at regional rival Saudi Arabia-a close U.S. ally-which Iran accuses of funding extremism and groups including IS.

US President Donald Trump's response to the terrorist attacks in Iran has been denounced by Tehran as "repugnant".

The "spilled blood of the innocent will not remain unavenged", the Revolutionary Guard statement said.

Sunni Saudi Arabia denied any involvement in the attacks.

They were later claimed by IS, the first the group has claimed inside Iran.

"I am sure Persian Gulf Arab countries are behind this", said Nahid Ghanbari, a 21-year-old university student studying accounting.

What's more, the Saudis may actually risk driving Qatar - the world's largest producer of natural gas, and home to the largest United States air base in the region - even closer to Iran.

Intelligence Minister Alavi said that the terror threats had intensified against the country in the last month and few days during they arrested groups of two, three or individuals every week. He told a group of students that if "Iran had not resisted", it would have faced even more troubles.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said that as the Iran legislation moves forward, lawmakers will have an opportunity to offer amendments that would authorize new sanctions on Russian Federation.

Parliament was in session when assailants armed with Kalashnikov rifles and explosives stormed the building around mid-morning, said Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad Hossein Zolfaghari. The Islamic State group claimed the attacks. One of the attackers reportedly left the scene for a time and ran around shooting before returning to the Parliament compound. A woman was also arrested.
