Iranians Attend Funeral Procession for Victims of Tehran Terror Attacks (+Videos, Photos)

In twin terror attacks in Iran's capital Tehran, attackers stormed and seized Iranian Parliament in session on June 7, while a suicide bomber targeted the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, reported media.

The standoff lasted around five hours before all the gunmen holed up in parliamentary office buildings were killed. Dozens of people were wounded.

The U.S. statement of solidarity with the attack's victims is notable because of the deep distrust between the U.S. and Iran.

"We grieve and pray for the innocent victims of the terrorist attacks in Iran, and for the Iranian people, who are going through such challenging times".

Trump tweeted that "states that sponsor terrorism risk falling victim to the evil they promote".

That second sentence, suggesting Iran bears responsibility for an attack against its civilians, was not well-received, NPR's Peter Kenyon reports.

Trump's first overseas visit to Saudi Arabia last month positioned the US firmly on the side of the kingdom and other Arab states in their stance against Iran.

President Trump's tweets are official statements, White House
The president turned down the offer, but Tuesday, the White House declined to say whether Trump still had confidence in his attorney general.

Other parts of Trump's administration have been striving to moderate that message.

"It (the attacks) will not damage our nation's determination to fight terrorism. but will only increase hatred for the governments of the United States and their stooges in the region like the Saudis", Mr Khamenei said.

The United States and several allies in the Middle East have been fighting against the Islamic State.

The raids come also two weeks after almost 42 million Iranians took to ballot boxes on May 19, overwhelmingly voting to keep incumbent President Rouhani in post, an election Zarif called "the seat of democracy".

It was the first attack in Iran claimed by Daesh, which had threatened to step up its campaign in the country in recent months. He added that it is too early to determine Saudi Arabia's complicity in the attacks.

Any struggle for influence between the Sunni Muslim kingdom and the revolutionary Shi'ite theocracy ought to take place "inside Iran, not in Saudi Arabia", he said without elaborating.

"Now that they are unable to maintain the promise of territory, attacking Iran is to their advantage", she said. "The fact ISIS claimed responsibility proves that they [Saudi Arabia] were involved in the brutal attack". Minister of Intelligence Mahmoud Alavi said Thursday that certain aspects of the terror attacks can not be disclosed at the moment.
