Saudi: We'll strike you in your own homes, Islamic State threatens

"The mastermind and main commander of terrorist attacks on the parliament and Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini was killed today by the security forces", Mahmoud Alavi was quoted as saying by state broadcaster IRIB on Sunday.

This week's attacks at parliament and the mausoleum of the Islamic Republic's founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini have exposed shortcomings among the Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) which was supposed to be protecting these potent symbols of Iran's revolution.

The death toll from Wednesday's incidents in Tehran grew to 17, while more than 40 others were wounded.

The attacks should not come as a surprise; the Islamic State has repeatedly signaled its intent to strike Iran.

"Such acts will have no other result than to reinforce hatred for the United States government and its agents in the region, like the Saudi (government)", Khamenei wrote in a message of condolence.

In his first news conference after re-election with 57% of the votes, Iranian President Hassan Rohani hinted at the possibility of talks with Washington to ease remaining economic sanctions.

Donald Trump calls James Comey 'leaker', declares 'total vindication'
Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the House intelligence committee, said, "If there are tapes , we need to get them". Trump has been unusually silent on Twitter and declined to answer shouted questions from reporters Thursday about the testimony.

That drew fire from Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, who tweeted: "Repugnant WH (White House) statement... as Iranians counter terror backed by USA clients".

Meanwhile, Iran's Police chief Hossein Ashtari has announced that a group of some 60 suspects has also been detained near Tehran in relation to the terrorist attacks.

"The sites were carefully chosen, and are symbols of the regime", Dr. Harold Rhode, a leading expert on Iranian culture who served in the Office of Net Assessment at the US Department of Defense for 28 years, told

"The fact that Islamic State has claimed responsibility proves that they were involved in the brutal attack", the Revolutionary Guard said in a statement, referring to Saudi Arabia. "If we are expecting to see any change in Iran's regional policy or a retreat in any way - that is not going to happen", she said.

President Donald Trump is suggesting that Iran shares some blame for twin attacks by extremists on its parliament and a shrine, and insisting that sponsors of terrorism "risk falling victim to the evil they promote".

Supreme leader Ali Khamenei said the attacks "will not damage the Iranian nation's determination, and the obvious result is nothing except an increase in hate for the governments of the United States and their stooges in the region like Saudi".
